Guest guest
, Good point about Indian accents. I still have yet to nail them down with my CI. Today I had an Indian cab driver who was very nice, but I couldn't understand for the life of me. I finally had to speak in broken English so I could get an idea of what he was trying to say. Mona, who doesn't think she will ever learn how to understand Indian accents

Guest guest
I'm sure y'all will feel very sorry for me when I tell you that my employer is currently developing a new IT business system - in our 20th month of development with another 16 months to go...and the development team is from....drum roll please.... India!!! And one gentleman from Brazil, but he's much easier to understand, even with his accent. A few years back I also had to train a woman in her job who was from India (husband doctor was doing his residency here) and so really had to work hard to understand her, but it got easier with time. The IT guys, they all have different accents - I assume from different parts of India - so I struggle with them, especially if I haven't listened to them for awhile. So I know exactly what y'all are talking about... ________________________________ From: " lkozlik@... Guest guest
Skyrocketing unemployment here and they're importing labor? Why? Guest guest
'Cuz it's cheaper to pay foreign workers cents for every dollar Americans make. For example a factory worker in Vietnam is paid much less an hour compared to here in the states. And that's for factory floor workers - IT contractors make a lot more than that of course but they're still cheaper than US and Western Europe. Guest guest
Oh, yeah, I know but I thought you meant that they were bringing them over *here* from India. Guest guest
Sometimes we do contract " impats " from out contractors overseas - they come here and work short assignments and then go back home. Still cheaper because they're paid via their own companies, not ours. We did outsource our IT help desk call center to Mexico this past year and it's not been an outstanding success - their approval ratings were a dismal 27% 3 months after they started and it still hasn't improved that much from what I can tell. Guest guest
I was the one who made the original post about the IT development in our office. We have developers in India who is writing the system while we are sleeping. When we are awake, we are testing what they've done while they are sleeping. It is about 12 hours difference in time zones. We do have some key people who fly here to work in our office directly with our SME's - subject matter experts. ________________________________ From: Virg <jvtomlin@...> Sent: Friday, June 19, 2009 10:37:18 PM Subject: Re: OT working with computers Oh, yeah, I know but I thought you meant that they were bringing them over *here* from India.
