Hearing Loss Association of America

2010 Awards

By Cheryl Heppner 6/20/10

Keystone Award- Victor Matsui

The final event of each HLAA convention is an award ceremony and breakfast

at which many very deserving individuals are recognized for their work.

NVRC is especially delighted that Victor Matsui, who has given many years of

dedication and volunteer service on behalf of people with hearing loss and

Hearing Loss Association of America at the local, state and national levels,

was recognized with the national Keystone Award. Vic was cited for his years

of giving generously of his time and upholding HLAA founder Rocky Stone's

vision in his various leadership roles.

Vic told the audience that he was accepting this award on behalf of hard of

hearing people in Virginia. He recognized as some of his mentors Ann

Liming, Anne Pope, Mark Ross and Sam Trychin in addition to Rocky. He

recalled meeting Rocky for the first time in Pakistan in the summer of 1962.

Vic was advised to watch Rocky to see what he did with the old-style

amplifier box on his chest; if Rocky turned it one way, he was turning up

the volume, but it he turned it another he was tuning out. Vic said that

Rocky considered people the key element in his life and in HLAA, and if we

forget the self-help core of HLAA and fail to convey what we have learned to

others in a thoughtful, considerate and intelligent way, HLAA will be just

like any other organization. " We come back because we are an extended

family, " he said.

The opportunity to applaud so many good people makes the Awards Ceremony and

Breakfast is one of my favorite events each year and I always have to dab

water from my eyes a few times as I hear the inspiring stories and comments

like Anne Pope's introduction of one award winner whose philosophy is that

it's " not the difference we have but the difference we make. " Here are
