Guest guest
Hi Peggy When we take out to eat - he is the PERFECT gentleman. He always remembers his manners and he wipes his mouth after each bite. It is at home that we have to worry about. We visit 's everyday ( in 2 different cities) and the employees know us by heart. should be on a commercial about advertising for this restaurant chain!!!!!!!! P.S. Now she eats better than my other four!! Well, maybe not as good as her 20 yo brother, but she eats so much variety now. Her new favorite thing to eat is tomato soup. She eats chili, fish, certain veggies, chicken, meat.......Still won't eat cereal though. Her breakfast still has to be exactly the same each day. Guest guest
Hi Peggy, Yes!! Our 8 year old Jordan, will only eat a very few limited foods. No Vegetables, No Meats. He is very constipated. I have recently switched him to soy milk, thinking it maybe less constipating, and healthier in the long run. I also got some 100%juice with vegetabel/fruit juice in it. It says 8 ounces=1 portion of fruits/vegetables. I feel so guilty sometimes, but if I offer him new foods, he just refuses. Any suggestions on getting our children to try new foods?? Thanks, Terri Mom to 23yrs-RTS, Elisha 16yrs-DS, Dereck 13yrs- FAE, 13yrs, and then there is Jordan 8yrs-DS (undiagnosed PDD-like issues)

But it helps her slowly adapt to eating different things. That was how I got veggies into her for a couple years. Now she eats them by themselves. Another little thing----ketchup. On everything. And butter. You can always cut back on these things after they learn to like the food. For instance, just imagine eating mashed potatoes with no butter....YUK. Actually, Maddie started to eat mashed potatoes only when we put ketchup on them......LOL Again, we don't do that anymore. But she still has to have ketchup on her eggs and grilled cheese sandwiches.....EW!!! Donna
Guest guest
eeating is such an issue with nathan too, when on meds, his appetite is pretty normal, but refuses to eat what we eat, jonly likes to eat, also bread products, hamburgers, hotdogs, oh and the biggie, PIZZA, i made spaghetti last night and ofcourse he just sat there, i have to offer him a reward just for a few bites, eg: he gets a bite of PB & J after each bite of unprefeered food, or gets to play video game when done)but he did eat some, and only gagged a few times, i had allredy purred his for him, he has a larynpharyngeal incoordiantion thing, due to lack of muscle tone etc, doesnt chew food much if at all, and has a very hard time with textures. BUT if not on right dose meds oh boy need mega locks on all food including the garbage can, during his last bout broke the fridg lock, drank a gallon of milk in just a couple minutes, broke one of the cupboards ate a whole bag of chips, and he rarely even touches chips, go figure, ate two loves of bread and was constantly crying for food, and signing he was hungry. He has siety issues too, he gained 6lbs suring that time frame, so they uped his dosage and back to usual id have to say, he does seem to be hungry at night when it wears off, so i usually give him a snak of sandwich and milk or a yogurt, i think it hleps him sleep too to have a snack, helps relax him. shawna. Guest guest
a, Well that's kindof good I guess. Good job on making him eat a few bites. and Peggy, Well yes it's hard to get this 3rd grader that I watch to eat normal foods, like nutrious stuff. Well the only nutrious thing that he'll eat is a bannana and then I give him bacon for reward if he has trouble eating something, chips, cookies, graham crackers. Stuff along those lines. He likes the fruit gronalla bars also, and icecream. He'll eat, so far he hasn't refused to eat so that's good. > > Do any of you have difficulties getting your kids > to eat? He had the growth you describe with when he took Risperdal. He just seems to go through these cycles. He wasn't eating all that much before I started the nutritional supplements but it is so many pills in addition to his regular meds he was taking so long and stalling that I thought it was worsening the problem. I drove into town this afternoon and picked up two kinds of yogurt, a vegetable platter that he saw and wanted, some of those little round cheeses that he likes, jello pudding, those little cottage cheese and fruit things. I gave him his pills and supplements in yogurt and that went very well. Then he ate a couple of vegetables, cottage and fruit (all of it but I fed him) and a cheese snack plus drank some Gatorade and some water. That is the most he has eaten in days. In terms of the cute things is saying and complete sentences, we are really seeing that with the TMG and vitamins. It is so exciting. Guest guest
Gee ! Peggy , Ray , is really going the opposite direction as he gets older . is not that far off , though . I know when would not eat , just very limited food . I would find ways by taking him also to his favorite rest. , but then our outings were limited too , due to his aggressiveness . He was losing alot of weight . Started to look like a walking stick , he's tall and slim . At home , I was able to get him to eat his favorite meal by helping out preparing it . Even if it was a repeated meal . Lots of fluids for sure . He enjoyed it, but ate like a bird . Now , I can't stop him from eating . Which, I don't mind because he gets ill alot (knock on wood). He's gone through 3 sizes now , since Feb. 2001 . I know the Multi- vitamin/multi-mineral helped alot, FOR . That was the only thing I had tried . Now I have him on the Flax Seed Oil with Olive Leaf Extract trial for 3 mos. I have seen more improvement on his break-out skin, face, and his psoriasis on his head , clearing off. He did have a set back and I believe the culprit was the SUGAR . I know this was not much help for your son . Just wanted to share my story as we went through this , too . Oh ! I did try the milkshake routes , which he loved. I hope this is a temporary crisis for Ray . Don't know exactly what is triggering 's system now, for the best . But, today surprised me again . I was busy cleaning house and I felt behind me . Says " Mom , come here " and then said " Give me your hand " . Grabbed my hand took me to the kitchen and then said " drink , please " . My Goodness ! That was alot of talking from him . Yes! Wishing you luck . Hang in there . Irma , 12, DS/ASD P.S. As I'm writing this . I'm smiling because I just heard say " Dad, come here , turn off ,( meaning his video just ended ). Daddy was shock to hear all that , too . > > > Do any of you have difficulties getting your kids > > to eat? It seems like > > > there are days Ray doesn't eat enough to > > survive. Guest guest
Terri, I've written a lot in the past about techniques we used in getting Brook to eat when he was younger. Maybe you could look through the archives and see if you can find anything. This is a topic that is a problem for many of our kids. My son is doing better with eating now that he is 11, but we have struggled for years to get him to eat and we are still working on it all the time. Guest guest
Peggy , Ray is a lucky young man to have you as a mom. never experienced any medicaton until the latter part of 2000 . Only 1 seizure at the age of 3 due to an ear infection , high fever . I still get paranoid when he has a fever . Its nice to hear Ray is coming along on what you've found to feed him . Veg .? Thats great . I can't get to eat that , just salads . Finger food worked well , too . Yes ! its exciting to hear our young men communicate . Sometimes shocking ! They will always fill our hearts . Time will tell and we will always be there for them , as we love them so much . Keep up the good job as you've been doing throughout his life . But then you know that with his happy expressions . I probably shouldn't laugh about this but today he hit me really hard and the part time caregiver really got down on him telling him not to hit his mom. He got quiet then he just kept saying " My mom, my Mommie Marget " (he is the only one that gets by with calling me Margaret since I have been nicknamed Peggy for years). He continued it so long it got cute, it was like he was telling her to but out I was his mom. Another exciting thing to share since we are on the eating topic. I have had him on TMG/DMG and other supplements for almost 3 weeks. Dr. Rimland at Autism Research says that DMG can increase hyperactivity and that is your child telling you he needs more folic acid. He recommends a lot and I was afraid to get it overdosed. Today the doctor told me not to worry about that. I gave him 1200 mcg. just before the punching episode so it had been in his system long enough to help. Within 30 minutes he calmed down, didn't want the one on one he constantly demands, did well in the restaurant (ate a lot for him), came home fed the horses well and seemed happy and went into his room to watch a movie and didn't want anyone with him. He hasn't been this independent and calm in I can't remember when. I certainly know better than to get excited with him but I am sure going to monitor it. Today I got about half his scrambled eggs down him and a whole Danimals Yogurt with his meds for breakfast at 5 a.m. (because he woke up at 4:30), then at 9:00 I repeated the TMG and folic acid in a whole Jello pudding which he ate all of it. At lunch I gave him a whole Yoplait (?) small yogurt with his lunch meds and half of a cottage cheese and fruit and believe it or not he ate a whole grilled cheese sandwich even though it took him about 2 hours. At four he had another yogurt with his snack meds/supplements. I think that is pretty good and we haven't even had dinner yet. There is a breaded Halibut fish portion that I get at Costco that he likes and I have a little left over of that type and a package of another that are in the oven. Hopefully he will eat. Sometimes he eats that when he won't eat anything else. The only thing I have done differently is to give his pills in yogurt instead of having him take them with liquids and I added more folic acid to the supplements. His behavior has been noticeably better with the added folic acid and staying on 4 hour schedule for TMG. Someone had suggested I hold the TMG as a trial. I haven't done that but if we are longer than four hours we know it quickly. We have only had one night in over a week (I've lost track that he didn't go to sleep until morning). Last night it was between 11-12 which is good for him. However, he had several nights in a row of 8-10 hours of sleep. I read the literature on TMG that talks about it having SamE in it with DMG and it says that SamE helps the Melantonin work better. That may explain the improved sleep. Who really knows with this kid. Night before last when I was up late with him I was on the web from his computer. I read something about eating problems. They did mention a supplement but I can't remember which one. I am going to try to go back again and see it makes sense. Peggy
