Guest guest
Hi Everyone, I've been a looky lew on her for awhile, this site has been so aweseome, you guys have really covered alot of questions before they are even asked. I'm having surgery on Monday and I can't believe how nervous I am right now. If someone could help me out, I do have a couple of questions: 1) do they give you ice chips after surgery? if so are they with bottled water? 2) how is the language barrier with the hospital staff? I greatly appreciate everyones help.
Guest guest
I was there last week. No language problems at all. I didn't get ice chips but I was given bottled water that I was allowed to swish and spit. When I complained about being so dry Dr. Campos turned up the IV drip for me too. Just relax and let them take care of you. Guest guest
Hi. They give you bottled water. The nurses during the day are the best at speaking English. During the night shift, where was always at least one that spoke good English. I never found that there was any kind of a language barrier. It is very normal to feel the way you are feeling. You are in excellent hands, we all thought the very same thoughts you are having right now. Hugs, Suzanne In a message dated 2/12/2010 12:33:49 P.M. Guest guest
The day shift has an AMAZING staff of nurses that speak PEFECT English. The night shift I had a LITTLE trouble communicating with. I was asking one of the cleaning gals for a fan. I had out my sheet of "frequently used phrases in Spanish" and asked the gal for a fan (in Spanish mind you) - I was reading. She said, "no english" My friend and I had a good laugh over how pathetic I READ spanish!! She went and got a nurse and viola I had a fan Another funny one, was my friend wanted a Dt. Coke. The cafeteria was closed for renovations so we didn't know what to do. I tried to ask one of the night staff and she said "For You????!!!!" - remember we aren't supposed to drink pop anymore and it was less than 12 hrs after my surgery! I said, "no for my friend". They weren't sure what to do with me and they called Yolanda and again... viola! There were 2 Dt. Cokes for her. Everyone was amazing and I would go back in a second!!! I can't wait to have my revision surgery done there!! Guest guest
Cyrena: so you are going for a revision to the sleeve? You and Bipley have been helpful to me with the band. Think we were all banded pretty much the same time. For me was 4/07. Yes there are problems but I wouldn't care to change. Is the sleeve reversible? If so how? can the stitches come out? Just wondering. I may be the only one left w/the band...no, my friend Ray who went the same time as I did is still happy and thin w/the band. Good luck to you and thanks for the name of the rx for heartburn...of course once it was ordered I did not need it...it's been about 4 weeks now w/no heartburn etc., but will keep 'em on hand just in case it returns. Eager to hear how the revision works for you. jb Re: Surgery Scheduled for Fed 15th I remember those days well. Hated that band, hated it with a passion. Guest guest
Hi Joanne,Yes, there were a bunch of us banded at the same time, we have supported each other for a number of years, haven't we What a wonderful bond, getting skinny together. No the sleeve is not reversable. I had a hard time wrapping my head around that fact when the sleeve was starting to get rave reviews. I just couldn't imagine not having the flexibility that the band has. I wanted to be able to say, this is too tight or not tight enough. I have always known that the band was 100% for me. I wanted to be able to get pregnant and have all the fill out and eat "normal" during that time and then get another fill afterward and be fine. Wow was I wrong. I have NO fill in my band and I can't eat solids, and some liquids are too much. I have to start around noon sipping hot tea (no nutrition), then after I can get hot tea in I can sip a protein shake - around 2 or 3 PM. Then around 7 or 8 I can have a little more protein shake. I might have some ice cream as a treat. If I drink a protein shake for lunch, before the hot tea, I have terrible terrible pain in my stomach and want to throw up. Sometime I can fight past the puke feeling but it HOURS before I feel OK, yesterday I had a noon meeting, of course it involved food. I smiled at everyone and said, no I brought a drink thanks. I was trying to have warm milk, I took about 2 sips and then I had excuse myself and puke it up. Last night I had a dinner meeting I ordered a cup of soup, knowing I was stretching myself by thinking I could drink soup after a PB that morning but I also didn't want to look like a freak. So I had a couple spoonfuls of the soup and I have been in SEVERE pain since. Yes even this morning I'm dieing from those 2 bites. This sucks!! Everyday goes this way. If I had anything for a fill left I could see that I need an unfill but I don't, there are no options left for relieve other than having the band removed. I'm not real anxious to have band removed and gain all my weight back. I want to save the money for the sleeve procedure and then have the band removed and 2 months later have the sleeve. But we will see. Next week I have a trip planned to Bismarck and I'm seriously thinking about checking if my insurance would cover having the band removed. I just hate living in pain like this from trying to get nutrition. UGH! Ok, so back to your questions...No the sleeve is not reversable but is the band??? I could have it taken off and gain weight again. I don't think that is "reversible" we were looking for in the band. I just wanted to know that I could have the fill taken out and then go back to eating normal. Not the case for me!Can the stitches come out? What stitches are you refering to? The ones that stitch your stomach closed on the inside? or the stitches they put on the outside when they are done with the procedure? If you are saying the stitches that closed your stomach the answer would have to be yes, that is why you want to pick a surgeon as skilled as Dr. Aceves. HIS stitches don't come out, he doesn't get leaks around his stitches either. Bipley could speak to this statistic much more eloquetly then me. I just know that NO ONE other than Dr. Aceves would do that surgery on me! No one!!I hope you don't need the RX in the future but yes, hang onto it. Acid reflux has been MAJOR problem for me since my band is way too tight and there is nothing I can do about it.Oh, what a sad posting this sounds like, I just have to end on a happy note. I weighed 240 lbs in Jan 2007 and now I weigh 129, I wore a size 20 in Jan 2007 and now I wear a size 6! I will take success like that any day/any way! Guest guest
Weight loss is double with a sleeve vs. a band. Long term risks and complications are great in number for bands and few for sleeves. Bands need a lifetime of aftercare, sleeves do not. Less invasive does NOT mean safer long term. The safest surgery long term of all WLS types is the sleeve. There is no getting stuck with a sleeve after the first couple of months. We have no stoma, bands have stomas. I feel stuffed, just ate 2oz of steak and I am stuffed full.On Thu, Feb 18, 2010 at 1:34 PM, Vonnie <silverspoonkatie@...> wrote: >I would really like to know if you had the band and now the sleeve, why is it better. Guest guest
Darling Girl! I had no idea of the circumstances regarding your decision. Have you recd' info re the band and the cause of these problems? Well, of course you have, and what is being said?? I have had similar situations but a little unfill has done the trick each time, and has ALWAYS been the result of coughing my "gutz out" ! One time w/a cold, one time w/choking on a pill and the last time was a cold again that turned out to be a sinus infection! So I run down to Dr. Campos and he takes some out and then a few weeks later I go back and he puts a little back and I am good to go. I must really thank the stars for that capability. I was living in Vegas all that time...and a few months ago we moved to Panama City Beach, Florida. I am looking for someone to help me if/when a problem occurs. And no honey, no more surgeries for me unless it is to live. I was 70 when I had the band 3 years ago so you can add! Prior to the band I have had back surgery and a pacemaker, and then new batts in the pacer. I weighed in at the hospital at 208, had lost about 5# during the pre-diet stuff...now weigh about 140 plus or minus a couple of pounds. I COULD lose more but the face shows it at this age! Well, heck the face probably shows it anyway. And I too am size 6P!! I thought I was an idjit to even think I could get the surgery, but I did and the experience was totally wonderful...just as everyone says. My friend's husband had it done the same day too...and then my friend had the sleeve about 8 months ago. Get this: My husband, who doesn't really have a weight problem, lost about 20# just because he was not keeping company w/me and my eating! So in a way we got two for one! My thoughts and prayers are w/you....hope you get the $ together so that you can get what you need, including that baby! Thanks for the long and personal reply.
