Hi Debbie,

Cleveland Clinic is not my implant center, just one of them in town.

They are opening an implantable hearing device center in the next few

weeks, with surgeon, AV therapist, audiologists and hearing aid

specialists all in the same center. And from what I'v heard, at least

one session of AV therapy will be required to assess how well a person is

hearing and speaking with the CI. Seems like a great idea to me,

especially for pre linguaglly deafened adults. Children tend to get AV

therapy as part of their individual with Disabilities education act

(IDEA). But adults kind of fall through the cracks on this. Further AV

therapy might be required, depending on how you are doing.

When we had a support group meeting and the topic was AV therapy, the

guest speaker was very good on telling people HOW to get what they need.

Don't just say, " huh? " , say, Can you rephrase that, or " I didn't

understand the last word you said, can you look at me when you speak?

Things like that. Really helpful hints for LISTENING. Speech

pathologists are good for teching speech again, too.

I would think if the AV therapy is required, it would be submitted

along with mappings and other appointments to your insurance company.

I'm curious to know why your CI center only requires 1 AVT therapy

session? Does all of the CI users's insurance pay for the therapy

session? If not, does it have to be paid out of the CI user's pocket?
