Guest guest Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 hello everyone, I saw my audiologist today in Memphis for new mappings. I had the booth test before the new mappings and I must say I was disappointed. I was able to get only 54 percent of the words and 69 percent of my sentences with my Freedom. However, I was able to converse with my audiologist using only my freedom. He said I did quite well considering I've only been activated for two weeks. Now with the improved mappings I'm sure I could do better. When I crossed the street today with my sister, I was able to tell when I would have been able to cross the street. I also noticed I can go up to a building and tell the door is coming near by the sound. I once did this before losing my hearing. Does anyone know where I can buy an Id bracelet or necklace? I am worried about being in an accident and a deranged doctor giving me mri's and sucking the implants from my head. Larry Quote
Guest guest Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 Those figures with the old map don't seem bad to me especially for only 2 weeks! Is this with the new Freedom implant alone? Why are you disappointed? I think what matters is what the implant can do for you and your quality of life rather than the actual figures and stats. It's not an exam but rather a benchmark to see how well you progress further down the track. It sounds like you are doing really well to me. Guest guest Posted August 1, 2006 Report Posted August 1, 2006 Hi Larry, The results for only 2 weeks are nothing to be disappointed in, I remember your initial surgery & reports and if I recall you had a good start after the first surgery but it was around the one month mark before you were booth tested so it might not be a fair comparison to previous test scores. The other thing to remember is the electrode placement is not likely to be exactally the same so you do have some adjustment to make there are probably some slight differences in the area's of the Cochlea that are receiving stimulation and that will take some adapting. Also don't forget it is no more than 6 weeks since surgery so there still could be some healing going on in there and that can have an effect as well. I guess bottom line you have nothing to be disapointed in lots of time for more improvement and I know from your previous posts you don't give up easy ;-) On your question on Medical Bracelets here are a couple of sites to look at... http://www.medicassist.net/ http://www.safetyproductsunlimited.com/medscope.html I know there are plenty of others but I had these 2 saved, the Medscope looks very interesting I think that is what I will get myself, if I ever remember to order it... Guest guest Posted August 1, 2006 Report Posted August 1, 2006 Hi, Larry, I wear both a 3G and a Freedom. I am also sighted. The Freedom is obviously the newest implant and I got it in Sept.2005. I am hearing 100% in the booth with just the Freedom. In real life, I can NOT usually hear a car coming from behind me and still can't localize where sound is coming from very well. I always wear both processors when I'm out. So, please, give yourself some time, and appreciate how far you've come in so short a time. ) Jackie Implanted - right ear - Oct.2002 - Nucleus 24/3G Reimplanted - right ear - Jan.2005 - Nucleus 24C/3G Implanted - left ear - Sept.2005 - Nucleus-Freedom Quote

Guest guest Posted August 1, 2006 Report Posted August 1, 2006 Hi Larry! I am one who has never had a booth test since my CI Candidacy. I do not want to know my percentage. I much rather go with real life experience and have the satisfaction knowing that I am hearing better now with my CI than I ever heard in my whole life. I am grateful I have an audie who does not test if the patient does not want to be tested. I don't need a test to tell me that I am hearing better than I ever did. Plus, I don't want to find out that I am testing above 80% in words and sentences in the booth when I know I am not consistently doing that in real life. I just much rather go with how I am doing in real life and I get mapped with real life observations on how I am doing. Having typed all that, I will now tell you that testing 54% in words and 69% with sentences after only two weeks sounds super to me so please do not be dissappointed! Remember it keeps on getting better with time and more mappings. Take it a day at a time with your new ear. Enjoy what you do hear and understand with it. And remember it will keep on getting better! I am just amazed you can tell when a door is getting near by the sound. That's really neat and very fortunate for you that you can tell that. Continued success to you, Larry! Guest guest Posted August 1, 2006 Report Posted August 1, 2006 hello , The tests were done with my Freedom only. If I had done the tests with my 3G, which I have worn for over a year, I would have done 100% across the board. It took three months for me to get used to the 3G, and I am sure I will have the same luck with my freedom. I hope everyone doesn't think I am bragging. I am so ecstatic! Guest guest Posted August 1, 2006 Report Posted August 1, 2006 hi , I must admit, I am at a loss to explain how it really sounds. My footsteps when approaching a door are different, and I can tell how close the door is to me. had a name for it. I am sorry I couldn't answer your query sufficiently. Guest guest Posted August 1, 2006 Report Posted August 1, 2006 , I certainly agree with you 100%. Yes, the Freedom has certainly been better than it was the first time around. Nothing like reality to give you the rest of the story. warm regards, Larry Re: new mappings > Larry, > Disappointed? Why? Was it or was it not better with the Freedom first > time around? Guest guest Posted August 1, 2006 Report Posted August 1, 2006 hi Mike, Thanks for the websites. I'm sure they will be useful. When my first Freedom was turned on, it sounded as if a three-year-old child was having a temper tantrum and yelling directly in my ear. It never worked correctly and caused me intense pain. The surgeon who did my reimplantation, Dr. Dornhoffer, discover the implant was crimped. I heard the tones much more clearly the second time around. When my audiologist turned me on, it sounded like my 3G; a cartoonish but understandable. It still sounds a little cartoonish, but so did my 3G for the first three months. I now have HiAce 3500. I would appreciate information on battery drainage. The other three programs are set for 2400. I found I like adro. Thanks for your support. Guest guest Posted August 1, 2006 Report Posted August 1, 2006 hello Patti, Thanks very much for the encouragement. I am now practicing with www.voaspecialenglish.com It is a very good website that will speak slowly and distinctly. (you must have real or windows media player for this website. It is also available on podcast) I was able to have a real conversation with only my Freedom after getting out of the booth. Guest guest Posted August 1, 2006 Report Posted August 1, 2006 hi Jackie, Thank you for those words of support. I will certainly take it one day at a time and realize some days will probably be better than others. Did you have chronic hiccups and dehydration after your surgeries? I didn't with the first two surgeries but the third surgery was much more painful. My audiologist told me it was because I spent three and a half additional hours under anesthesia to get rid of scar tissue. He stressed upon me to realize this was only a hypotheses.
