Dolly,

There are two brothers from Montreal who have received simultaneous

bilateral CIs, and they posted here but have not heard from them as of late.

Their surgeries were performed in Quebec City. They have a type of

DeafBlindness known as Norrie's.

Hi Dolly,

I am not sure of the " Status " of Bilateral implants in Canada in

general, but I know of one adult for sure who has received a bilateral

implant, we have been eMailing off list for the past month or so. I

think she may be part of a study but I am not sure, I know she has a

3G and now a Freedom in the other ear, so it looks like Bilateral

implants are at least in the " Study " or " Trials " stage in Canada. I

spoke to my Audi about this some time ago and she said it was not

happening at that time (8 months ago I think) mainly because of

funding in this area was her guess, she said the additional benefit

was not that great over one implant and most provincial health plans

wanted to give as many patients as possible first implants before

spending their limited health dollars on bilaterals. To be honest I

can't argue with that for myself, I do very well with a single CI and

I would rather see someone else get the chance to hear before I

received a second CI, now for kids, I think it is a bit different,

especially pre ling children I feel they deserve a shot at bilateral

implants for various reasons not the least of which is safety, they

need to learn to know where sound is coming from and 2 ears will do

that. My understanding is some provincial plans are starting to

approve Bilateral implants for children, (Manitoba, and Ontario if I

remember correctly???)

Maybe the Cdn health plans will change and start offering bilateral

implants to adults and kids but unless it was for some type of study

to improve the technology I can't imagine looking to get one myself.

I am wondering if any Canadian have Bilateral Implant?

My impression right now is there is none done here in Canada, is that

correct?

I tried to find out if any Bilateral Implant is done in Canada on the

Website but had no luck so far.

I am new to the list serve.

42 year old male - Severe to profound loss since birth. Hearing aids

(high power BTEs). Nucleus 24 cochlear implant 8 years ago. Stopped

wearing a hearing aid in other ear because of optic nerve problems 6

months ago and was using it very little for the past 2 years.

Looking at a bilateral implant.

I would like to hear from people who are reasonably similar to my

situation for their comments about bilateral implants.

Many thanks in advance.
