Guest guest Posted November 19, 2006 Report Posted November 19, 2006 To Whomever wants to know...sorry but you did not give a name: This is an exciting time for you and your family and friends! I wish you the best on your journey out of muffleness. I take it you are worried about imbalance after the surgery. Some people experience it and some don't. There is no way of knowing, for sure, if you will experience it or not. Unfortunately, my balance went out the window following my CI surgery. It took me 14 months of eye exercises to start feeling like my old self again with the first 12 weeks being the worst of it for me. Today, four years after surgery, my balance is still not great but I no longer feel sick and I have no regrets. I am very much in awe with what my CI has given me since hook up day! Good luck to you. Keep posting with questions and concerns and be sure to keep us posted on how it's going for you. May your surgery be successful and your recovery smooth. Patti Surgery Day 11/25/02 (What A Day!) Guest guest Posted November 20, 2006 Report Posted November 20, 2006 Hi Len! Nice to " meet " you and welcome to CI Hear! This time is quite an emotional time for you. It's normal to be nervous and worried. Feel free to vent or ask more questions. Someone is usually able to answer back. Please try to relax and take things as they come. Do what your medical team says to do and you should be fine. So, you are worried about shots I take it. I didn't get the Mennigitis shot before my surgery due to a recall of the vaccine right before my operation and so none was to be had in Pennsylvania. The day of my surgery the nurse stuck an I.V. line in my arm and that's where I got all my shots for the next 3 days so I didn't feel a thing when I got a shot. The trick to getting a shot in the arm, without an I.V. line, is to relax your arm and not bend the elbow so that the muscle stays relaxed and think of something pleasant. Works all the time for me. I have not felt an injection since a nurse taught me this when I was in the fifth grade and I used to scream for shots. Let me assure you, Len, that despite my imbalance, the CI surgery was one of the best medical procedures I ever put myself through! I am in AWE with what my CI has given me in almost 4 years of being hooked up! It's better than any hearing aid I have ever worn! Good luck to you! Keep us posted on how it's going for you. Guest guest Posted November 20, 2006 Report Posted November 20, 2006 To Len, It wasen't really a set back just a little inconvenience. The incision was a little sore, but putting neosporin ointment speeded up the healing process. Its really small potatoes when you think of everything you will gain. Don't worry about the little itty bitty things. a B On Nov 20, 2006, at 3:53 PM, brnrpal@... wrote: > thank you a B I really wanted to know. did you have any other > set backs? > Len > > Quote
Guest guest Posted November 20, 2006 Report Posted November 20, 2006 Len, Do you really think you will go into the operating room without any type of antisthetic? You are completely OUT. My surgery site in L.A. gave me IV. I was completely asleep during the entire procedure. Woke up and it was all over 1 1/2 hrs later. a B On Nov 20, 2006, at 3:55 PM, brnrpal@... wrote: > did you have to get shots befor the op. > len > > Quote
Guest guest Posted November 20, 2006 Report Posted November 20, 2006 Len, Welcome to ! When I received an IV before both of my surgeries, the nurse numbed the area before inserting the needle. I didn't feel a thing and was completely " out " within a few seconds. Guest guest Posted November 21, 2006 Report Posted November 21, 2006 I know cochlear sent a letter strongly recommending the menegitis vaccine in all ci recipients it must have been about 7 yrs ago. I just got a booster the other day. Vivian Quote
Guest guest Posted November 21, 2006 Report Posted November 21, 2006 Hi Len, I think they either recommend or require the vaccines for everyone who receives an implant, as there is more of a risk for meningitis in new implantees than for non-implantees. I know I was required to have one. Better safe than sorry. Guest guest Posted November 21, 2006 Report Posted November 21, 2006 Len,l So sorry I misunderstood. Here in L.A. I was implanted with the Freedom. The meningitis vaccine was not recommended. Take care, Happy Thanksgiving, I know everything will work out fine for you.
