Hi,

First, let me welcome you to CI Hear and congratulate you for your

upcoming surgery. It sounds as if 2005 will be a hearing year for

you.

I'm not sure what you are looking for as far as what to expect, but

let me see if I can fill in come blanks and if you have more

questions, please ask them so that we can help you with those things

that might be concerning you.

You will wake up in the recovery room and probably be very surprised

at how good you feel. They will have given you pain meds so that

you won't feel anything from the surgery. Since this is normally

outpatient these days, they will try to see if you are able to keep

a little food on your stomach and drink liquids. If there are no

problems, you will be released to go home normally with a

prescription in hand to take care of any pain you might experience

for a few days. I never had to take any of the pain meds and only

took Tylenol but some people need them and it's advisable to take

them if you do. You should also have instructions from your doctor

about a post op visit to check your incision.

When you go home, you may have a few days where you feel the

lingering effects of the anesthesia. Just plan to take it easy for

a few days and I always recommend a recliner for sleeping if

possible. I do this for two reasons. First, I feel that it's more

comfortable and second, I think it helps to lessen the dizziness

that sometimes happens because of the trauma. It's best to walk a

little slower and not to turn your head fast in any direction and if

you do this, you may not have any dizziness at all. Not everyone

does. By the way - this is your time to let everyone pamper you.

You earned it.

Normally, the doctor sees you somewhere in the area of a week to 10

days after surgery. This is when you find out if your incision is

healing properly and if it is, and the date for your activation has

not already been set, they will tell you to go ahead and make that

appointment. If there are stitches or staples, the doctor will

remove them at this time. Not all doctors use these any longer so

you might want to ask the surgeon what is used to close the incision

and if you will need to have stitches or staples removed. While you

are waiting for the activation, you will not hear anything in the

implanted ear.

Activation ranges between 2-6 weeks now, dependant on the

audiologist who will need to schedule this for you. On activation

day, you get your reward. <smile>

Did I miss anything?

Everyone is different. Me? I woke up with a headache, sore throat and my

heels hurting (another story). No dizziness or vomiting. I stayed

overnight and slept most of the way home (2 1/2 hr drive) and most of the

next day but was getting cabin fever by the third day. Went back to work

after being off for 6 days and except for feeling tired, no problems.
