It was his " last chance " , He went and fill out applicaiton for disablity (SSDI), becaues he qualified and I was married to him, they told me that I could qualify for SSI, so I filled the form out. He got approved, so did I. I qualifed for medicaid, he didn't. My SSI was for 3 dollars, not much, but it was to qualify me for medicaid and every little pennies helped. In October 1988, he died. In Nov. my SSI got canceled, and they switched me to survivor's. Once it happened, my Medicaid got canceled. When his COBRA was running out (i paid for it), I applied for Medicaid and was denied. 3 years later, they learned that I did qualified on spend down program and retroactive it and paid me back for all that I paid out of my pocket for past 3 years. This is how I learned about Spend Down for those who did not qualify for SSI. Once my younger turned 18, they reverted my Survivor back to SSI. This rid the spend down and put me back on regular Medicaid program. For a while, I did worked, earning about 1,000 a month, while it happened, my SSI went down to about 50 to 100 a month a month. If it wasn't for the little SSI i was recieving, I would have lost Medicaid. I was told, as long as I get it, even for one dollar, i qualified. and Phyllis, I am almost postive it was a just a little boo boo on your local Medicaid office. Like any government office, they make mistake alot. I once got a letter of cancellation from Survivor's because I " got married " ,, i called them and asked when I missed my own wedding! And another time, they canceled one of my daughters, because they thought she got married (yike,, she was only 13). Give them a call on Monday,,, that will straighten everyone's mind. OK,,, this is what i find on www.SSA.gov it seems that in 32 states and DC (that more than half of USA), if you get SSI, you automatically qualify for Medicaid. Hopefully, you two live in one of those 32 states. Stop worrying, let us know what you learned! And if you are one of the unlucky, there are spenddown program to fall back on. Guest guest
Lee, Since this is the first I've heard from Medicaid regarding my income, more and more I'm beginning to think you're right about this being some kind of an error. At least I know what my options are. Thanks for putting my mind at ease. Between your post and 's mochas, I'm feeling much, much better. Surgery date: 12/22/04 (26 days and counting!) Guest guest
I'm beginning to think you're right about this being some kind of an error. At least I know what my options are. Thanks for putting my mind at ease. , I have been thinking about this the past few days. I remember reading in one of your posts that you were told by someone at Medicaid that there was a change in the Medicaid policies and that is why you are being cut off. Do you remember receiving any " form letters " from the state describing any upcoming changes to the Medicaid program in your state. I know that everytime the state makes changes we receiving several mass mailings before the policy goes into effect. They are required to notify you of any upcoming changes in the policy so that you can prepare for the upcoming changes. I know when MN came through with all their changes this June/July I received like 4 or 5 different mailings in about 3 months. I also would find it hard to believe that a state would choose to make a major change in its policy in December. They usually will do this either in Jan or like mid-year because it makes it easier for management of the budgets and etc. I really do think that your applying for the certification for the CI is what started this whole process but that does mean that you have hope in this. I think requesting all your proofs from SSI is a good thing to do because if you have never sent them any proofs then they are going off some wrong data. Sometimes someone will key in a wrong figure or something like that. Good luck tomorrow and hope you sleep well tonight.
