Guest guest
Ted, When my audie increases the Ts and Cs, the volume is increased. He typically set a comfortable volume at 5, so I have some volume to work with, gradually increasing as the volume becomes soft to me. Guest guest
Ok let me see if I can explain it better. When you go the audie and she/he determines your T & C levels that is your program so to speak. The audie then takes those levels and dumps them into your processor and when you turn it on (assuming you haven't changed any thing) your processor will be using those T & C levels. So what happens is those T & C levels can be any number from 1-9 on volume. Most apparently are using 9 for those levels but in reality there is no reason why they couldn't be 1 (may not be practical but no reason they can't be). Apparently some where along the line someone decided that people should only be able to turn it up and not down. So basically my T & C levels as per my last mapping are at the appropriate level when my volume is set at 7 and sensitivity at 12. It really is harder to explain than have done. If it is still not clear maybe I can try again. Connie " Ted F. " <ted.fletcher@...> wrote: How would that work, Connie? Guest guest
Ted you can always ask your audie to put your old favorite program in one of the slots as a back up. I did this several times during my first 6 months. Connie " Ted F. " <ted.fletcher@...> wrote: Thanks, Carol. Some of these things are starting to sound like trial and error. Can one stuff up a " good " map at a mapping session? I know its quite normal for ones brain to take a couple of days to adjust to some new maps. When I get mapped next week, I will probably go three months until the next appointment. I havent felt comfortable about going too long in between visits, in case anything goes amiss. There will have been 5 weeks since my last mapping, when I go next week. I have been activated for just over 6 months now. Although I don't have a great deal of tolerance for sound yet in my newly implanted ear, I do like the freedom to be flexible enough to have the ability to control the volume. > Happy Hearing! > Carol > Boca Raton, FL > N24C 3G left ear -12/11/01 > N Freedom- right ear- implanted 3/01/06 activated 4/6/06 > " The Miracle at Ohio State " aka Nucleus Freedom Implanted 10/04/2005 Activated 11/1/2005 Surgery: Ohio State University Surgeon: Dr. Bradley Welling http://internalmedicine.osu.edu/article.cfm?ID=2021
Guest guest
Ted, Although there are numbers for Comfort and Threshold levels, no audie ever bothers to give those out. If I remember this thread correctly, you are referring to frequency (Hz)? If you ask your audie for a copy of your map the next time you go, you can see the Hz of all the sounds your implant is delivering and also see how they are allocated to each electrode. You can also see your maxima, stim rate, and other stuff I can't remember. Now all this is true if the hard copy still looks like it did years ago; I haven't asked for a copy of my map in ages. Guest guest
Is this when she plays the three beeps and you have to say whether either the second and third ones are louder or quieter than the first beep? Guest guest
I did that for the first couple of months, Connie. Then when I found a map I liked, I had all the bells and whistles put back on. I take it from your response, that one CAN stuff up a good map, then? Now that I know that I can adjust the sensitivity, I would probably sacrifice the auto-sensitivity programme at this time, because I am even using ADRO inside the car now, with the sensitivity turned down. I am keen to try out the Beam programme again now, with my new found knowledge ;-). Beam is the situation where I would like to be able to turn the volume up more, after turning the sensitivity right down. Ted F. > Thanks, Carol. Guest guest
Ted, I obviously know nothing about the Freedom but it sounds as though you have a " volume control " and that your audie has been setting loudness thresholds when you have the control at maximum. If that is the case it would seem prudent to have the control set at midrange, whatever number that is when the threshold is set at comfort level. You could go both up and down from there depending upon the situation. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding the whole conversation. My loudness level is set that way. I don't have numbers on the control. I just set it at 12 o'clock, which is midway between min and max. In practice I then run it between about 11:30 and 12:30. Guest guest
Well that is part of it but the actual part that are T & C is when you tell her when you can first hear something and when it is too loud. Those are the T & C levels. Connie " Ted F. Guest guest
Ted, After determining the comfort loudness level for me (which is unique to each person), my audie uses it as a mid range on the Freedom's volume, that being volume 5. This way, if I need softer volume, I go lower than 5 (0-4). If I need louder volume, I go higher than 5 (6-9).
Guest guest
Thanks, Virg. That seems to make sense to me. I have made a note of your message to take with me. Guest guest
What I meant by not having seen numbers , was that I dont know how the audi arrived at setting all my programmes on 9. That Hz stuff is too technical for me. I think when I explain to her what I want, to be able to turn the volume UP if I so desire, it will probably be an easy fix. I think they quite rightly err on the side of caution in these early days. Now I can fly, I want a bigger parachute :-) Ted F. > > Ted, > Although there are numbers for Comfort and Threshold levels, no > audie ever bothers to give those out. Guest guest
Hi Virg and Ted, At my last mapping, I had complained about needing more volume. My audie raised the gain until it was fairly loud, without being too loud or uncomfortable. We set that as the default and put it as #6. That way I have room to raise or lower the volume as needed. In fact, I have only had to raise the volume on occasion-- usually if I'm in a noisy situation and reduce the sensitivity a bit much, I will need to raise the volume to compensate. Otherwise the 6 position is about right, and I have never needed to lower the volume below 6. Guest guest
Lynn you may find that when you switch from an open program to ADRO you won't have the problem of needing more volume. I started with ADRO and 11 months post activation I asked for an open program--I am always one to try something. Well I don't like the open program and get much better volume and sound quality from ADRO that the open program will be removed at my next visit. Guest guest
Hello Lynn Thanks for this. I have copied it to take with me on Thursday, when I get mapped. The audi will be reading messages for the first 20 minutes :-). Its too technical for me, but the audi should know all about it. I cant think of one occasion when I have wanted to turn the volume down, but I have wanted to turn it up a bit. Guest guest
I'm using ADRO, Connie. But I would still like to be able to turn up the volume, should the occasion warrant it. I have got a few tips from here that I will take with me when I get mapped later this week. I will keep the ADRO I have now in one slot, just in case I stuff something up.
