I'm only locked on Beam, all rest are open. I can adjust them as I see fit.

I'm on volume 7 in some and 8 in another. My sensitivity settings are open

and I adjust them as needed, I never go up, I'm on a very low speed I stay

within the 7-8 zone on all my programs but Beam, and it's locked. Patsy

Thanks, . This answered a few questions for me, too. I have been

playing with my sensitivity settings and am now using ADRO inside the

car. I turned the sensitivity down to about 5 and my CD player in

there, which I know is a good one, sounds GOOD again.

Thats interesting about the volume being locked, because mine are

locked on 9 too. I get a new map next week, so I will ask to have

access to those settings too. Sensitivity settings go up to 20, so

does the volume go up to 20 too? Freedom, its well named :-)

Hi Ted,

The volume only goes up to 9. As far as sensitivity is concerned, I believe

the default setting is 12, but can go as high as 20.

My audi thought it would be easier if I had my Freedom locked to the volume

default so that I wouldn't have to worry about accidentally changing any

settings. Now that I'm comfortable with all of the controls, I'm anxious to

see how the ability to change volume and sensitivity affects my hearing.

I'm glad you found a setting which makes your CD player pleasant to listen

to. It can be annoying listening to music when it doesn't sound " right. "

When I could still hear well with HAs, I used a 12 band equalizer with my

late 70's/early 80's component stereo and was constantly fiddling with it in

order to make my music sound better. Now that I have my CIs, I'm starting to

do the same thing all over again. <grin> Music sounds *wonderful* with my

CIs, but being the audiophile that I am, old habits die hard. LOL!

I'm still using the same component stereo and 12 band equalizer after all

these years, but I'm dying to find out what 5.1 channels sounds like. I know

I'm missing out big time, but unfortunately, I don't have the money to spend

on a new stereo system.

Something I'm curious to know is if a lower sensitivity setting helps make

music sound smoother. Music sounds fantastic with my volume default set to

9, but I wonder if it's possible to receive more " bass " (lower tones)

quality by adjusting sensitivity?

Ted volume only goes up to 9. I have mine now set at 7 as default. Are you

sure yours are locked on 9--have you tried moving it down or only up.

Thanks for your reply! I'm glad to know that the volume setting on BEAM can

be adjusted. I thought someone mentioned that on the list before, but I

couldn't remember.

Right now the volume level is too low for me to receive any benefit from

BEAM. However, I'm sure that will change once the volume can be raised and

I'm able to use both of my Freedom processors.

Hi Patsy,

Yes, you're right. My audi " locked " me to a volume setting of 9 for all of

my maps. The only map where the volume doesn't seem loud enough is BEAM. All

of the remaining programs are fine with the exception of program 3 (an open

program) which is too loud for me at this point. :)

Ted,

If you can't get to your audie to have your C levels raised then try upping

your sensitivity. That will give you a very similar perception to raising

the volume.

Hello Connie, logically I had only tried turning it up, cuz I wanted

it louder. But I just dropped it back to 4 in this room where I am

and it didnt seem to make much difference. Thats a worry :-)

I'll try it again later when I go and watch TV.

This is all interesting to me on Volume/Sensitivity. I had CI June 2003. I

still do not hear music like " normal " (or, maybe I should say closer to

normal). Something (?) is definitely out of whack. It's hard to tell what

though. I'd call it " Lack of Melody " . I like the 50s music I grew up with and

Elvis sounds like himself most of the time - but the background music just

doesn't come in. Drums yes...and some instruments - but, the combination that

I

get is just strange and ends up being more irritating than enjoyable and when

he sings, it is just his voice I hear...no music until after he stops

singing. I figure his voice is drowning out the background melody that normal

hearing persons hear. In trying to reason out what is missing, I believe it

must be the higher pitch musical sounds/blend that is not there - or, just the

fact that his voice drowns out everything else.

Those of you who hear music well with only one CI might have some pointers

for me to try. Of course, I have tried changing volume/sensitivity and

switching programs the audiologist has put into my processor(s) (both the body

worn

and the BTE). I still remain unsuccessful though in finding that magic

combination that others have apparently found with their CIs to enjoy music.

Again, I realize that with individual hearing loss and programs, etc. makes it

difficult to pinpoint what I'm doing wrong (if anything). Everything else

seems good - so, I've really no huge complaints about the lack of pleasant

sounding music. It would just be an added plus.

Evon

(BTW....yes, my name is spelled correctly. It is not Evan. I'm female. My

name is pronounced like the " Avon " Company.... - except with my name you say

" E " instead of " A " ) - then the " Von " part. :) I've a twin brother (Leon).

The doctor who delivered us suggested the names and spelling. OK...I

know...I know...off Topic! ha

Ted,

When I go for a mapping, I like to have my T levels set a little louder than

what is comfortable. This allows me to have more " breathing room " to

increase or decrease the volume control as needed (or in the case of my

Freedom -- to stay with a particular program for a longer period of time). I

learned this lesson the hard way after setting my T levels *way* too

low...so low, in fact, that I couldn't hear traffic or other environmental

sounds. Now I always make sure to set my T levels to a point just above my

comfort level so I know I won't have any problems hearing. If a sound is too

loud, I can always turn down the volume (or switch to a softer program like

ADRO). I happen to have a very high tolerance for volume which means I can

have my T levels cranked up pretty high without experiencing discomfort.

Interestingly enough, my audi said this is common for late deafened adults

(like me) who have used very powerful HAs for many years.

Ted, with my 3G, I have had my audi set my maps while the volume is on 4 -4 1/2

so I have room to turn it down if I need to and also have room to turn it up.

Now that I am comfortable with my Freedom (newest ear implanted) I will have her

do the same with that one. Although I don't have a great deal of tolerance for

sound yet in my newly implanted ear, I do like the freedom to be flexible enough

to have the ability to control the volume.

Happy Hearing!

Ted I felt the same way so what you need to do is have your audie set your

default volume lower--mine is at 7. That gives me room to turn it up or down.

I actually was the first person to ask her to do this and she told me that she

now does it for alot of people.

Thanks, . Thats the kind of thing I had in mind, to get them set

a bit louder, then turn them down to about 7, so I had somewhere to

go if I wanted more volume. I too was late deafened and like you, I

never get the impression that the audi could do anything that would

How would that work, Connie? If it was set on 7, would I still be

able to have it as loud as I wanted when I left the office? If so, it

sounds along similar lines to what I was going to try. To get the

volume set a bit too loud for me, then turn it down to about 7.

I've had a bit f fun playing with the sensittivity settings, I was

looking forward to the same with the volume. I'm easily amused :-).

That's what I did, Ted, only I did it inadvertently. Next time it

be able to turn it up.

Patsy, I thought so too because that is what I was told. But I've

tried it numerous times and it never changes. Maybe it's just my

processor? Actually it makes me happy to have it remain the same

until I do change it. Have you tried it? Judy in Jax

Judy, I may be wrong but I was made to understand that it automatically

returned to the setting you had it on when you turned it off (and or

took the

batteries out). Patsy

Thanks, Carol. Some of these things are starting to sound like trial

and error. I definately want to be able to turn the volume up if

required. The thing that worries me, is that this map is very good

now and I dont want to do anything that might stuff it up. Is this

possible? Can one stuff up a " good " map at a mapping session? I know

its quite normal for ones brain to take a couple of days to adjust to

some new maps.

When I get mapped next week, I will probably go three months until

the next appointment. I havent felt comfortable about going too long

in between visits, in case anything goes amiss. There will have been

5 weeks since my last mapping, when I go next week. I have been

activated for just over 6 months now.

> Ted, with my 3G, I have had my audi set my maps while the volume is

on 4 -4 1/2 so I have room to turn it down if I need to and also have

room to turn it up. Now that I am comfortable with my Freedom

(newest ear implanted) I will have her do the same with that one.

Although I don't have a great deal of tolerance for sound yet in my

newly implanted ear, I do like the freedom to be flexible enough to

have the ability to control the volume.

Ted,

Why. I am guessing that we dont need a more fine adjustment of volume

as we do sens.

As to bumping your comfort levels up a notch past comfort, that may work

but it may also make sounds less tolerable. You and audi can play with

that.
