Guest guest Posted February 24, 2004 Report Posted February 24, 2004 Hi , The bony growth in the cochlea is generally present when a person had meningitis that caused the hearing loss. Sometimes otosclerosis will also cause bony growth. I think Dora Weber is the expert on that. While ossification (bone growing where it doesn't belong) makes an implant more difficult, it is not always impossible. Nucleus makes a double array that allows the surgeon to insert half the electrodes (11) in one end of the cochlea and half in the other. Usually the insertion is all 22 electrodes from one end of the cochlea. If the cochlea is filled with bone and it's too hard, I've heard of surgeons drilling out the bony part. But this is a real specialty, and not every implant surgeon has done this. However, if he heard with the hearing aids, (even if he didn't understand what he heard) chances are his cochlea isn't filled with bony material. Let's hope not. Off topic. I notice your e mail is cherry's shorty. Can you let me know what the term shorty means. I know it's a slang term for girlfriend, but not sure where it originated. You can write this off forum to me directly. Thanks, and good luck to both of you. Nucleus Volunteer one of the things that the doctor mentioned they will be looking for is boney growth in the ear that would prevent proper insertion of the implant. we are both very excited, but i would like to be prepared for any negative things they may find. if anyone knows about some of the things they will be looking for, or any solutions to any negative findings, if you could share it with me and then i will explain it to him, that would be so helpful to us. in my heart of course i hope everything will be just fine and we will be able to forge ahead, but in my head i know that we should be prepared with at least questions on anything they might see on the film. thanks, and as always, please take care and have a wonderful day. ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the Internet in years - Juno SpeedBand!
