If you have a baby and a 2 year old, there is absolutely no reason for you

not to be tired! :)

The tiredness is starting to go away I think (hard to tell with a new

baby in the house and a 2 1/2 yr old with a cold, lol).

Hi all

I'm new to the group after meeting Jessie at NWLS in mid-Aug.

I'm scheduled for surgery on Sapt 23 and am getting more excited every

day!!!

I have diabetes, hiBP, foot problems, all related to obesity. Hoping

to drop a lot of meds and get back to a more active life.

Love reading each of your journeys on your way to better health!!

I live over on the Olympic Penisula so Kirkland is doable for a day

trip, if we leave early and the subs aren't going in or out. LOL

For the past 14 years submarines have been a fixture in our life! In

the middle of our wedding in a soundside park in Port Townsend, a sub

came into view and everyone including the vidio photographer turned to

watch it! She left it in the final cut. A definate highlight for us!

Anyway I'm looking forward to getting to know you all.

Welcome to the group! Lexapro is great for me. I'm on 2.5 mg right

now. I'll probably stay on that for awhile. My mom died in April,

and I think I'd feel better staying on it till the anniversary of her

death is over.

Hi is,

welcome to the group.

I have been on lex close to 3 weeks....and it sounds like you are doing

better than I . so Congradulations on that. I started with an 1/8 of a

pill and didn't feel so great . after a week I went up to 1/4 pill and it

made me feel REALLY bad so I am back down to an 1/8. I am drowsy on the

1/8. I am so happy the lex is working so well for you.

by the way , I threw up and cried the 1st time I took it because I was so

full of nerves. You are not alone.

Welcome is!

I've only been here for a few weeks, but this group has been a

lifeline to me. You can also get personal-story type of info at

remedyfind.com under " depression " or " anxiety " , then " lexapro " .

I've been on lexapro for 5 or 6 wks. I remember what a rough ride

the initial adjustment was for me. Insomnia! That's improving.

I'm on 15 mg currently; just bumped it up, after a good response,

but then some return of symptoms (see my recent post " I'm increasing

my dosage " ) for details/story if you're interested.

I'm glad I was encouraged to stick with it. I've had some amazing

days on lex, when I actually felt like a " normal " person!

Feel free to ask questions of the group. They've got a ton of

knowledge and experience, and this seems like a really safe,

supportive place.

Also, feel free to share your story if you're comfortable. It's

always nice to get that " Hey, I'm not the only one going through

this! " -type of feeling.

Take care,

Patty

Wow.

Can you tell us more about that? I decided that I likely had

waardenburg's a couple years ago, and I'm 30, when a family friend got

a merle colored australian shepherd. However, both my grandparents

were deaf, one from scarlet fever, and one from birth where they

didn't understand why. And I have different colored eyes and two gray

hair spots, and my mother has wide apart eyes if you look - but she

and her father didn't have weird eyes or hair - so it seems likely but

not confirmed. My mother says she doesn't think we have it because

from childhood, she was intimidated for having a deaf parent, plus

some people had a eugenics attitude in germany. Being deaf actually

created a lucky space for him to not be inducted into the army during

WWII and to exist outside of the climate of the rest of that society,

and survive until the 1980s.

Can you tell us more about your experience, and also what the

mechanism was for suddenly going deaf at 31? I thought that you would

know at birth whether you would have hearing loss from this, although

my mother definitely probably has gone down to 80% of normal hearing

by age 71. Did you get a cochlear implant? around 1900-1920, schools

that taught lipreading were progressive, and both my grandparents were

able to do that quite well, which is impressive. Now, that is better

understood to make the deaf person have to accomodate hearing people

when sign language is easier or allows better understanding..

Hiya

Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you - my son jumped off the

local abbey ruins and broke 3 bones in his foot, so it's been a bit

hectic here the last week or so.

Right...down to business...

First of all I assume you are either in the US or Canada? The clue

was your question about cochlear implants. They are not readily

available in the UK as yet, mostly the medical profession fob their

patients off with substandard hearing aids and a handful of

batteries, which was of no use to me at all.

I have a classic case of Waardenburg Syndrome I, widely spaced eyes,

a small nose, I went grey almost overnight at the age of 15, and of

course heterochromia. My hearing loss began with what I believed was

a headcold but was actually a severe attack of tinnitus (something I

have had permanently now for 10 years) I was 7 months pregnant when

I woke up not being able to hear anything other than what appeared

to be a washing machine on fast spin in my head. I was admitted to

Guy's Hospital in London, where various doctors argued over whose

responsibility I was. The maternity department didn't want me

because my pregnancy was progressing normally, and the Ear, Nose and

Throat department didn't want me because I was pregnant. This

stressed me out so much that in the end my blood pressure shot up so

much that Maternity took responsibility for me. I had various

hearing tests and a brain scan which luckily proved negative (in

fact I'm sure all they found was an empty space!)and was sent home

with no further explanation. An appointment was made for 3 months

later, when I was fitted with a hearing aid. All that did was make

the background noises louder, everything else was still as if I was

trying to listen from 4 rooms away. I have some hearing, only very

high pitches though. So I can hear you scrunching up a piece of

newspaper at the other end of the room, but can't hear a man with a

deep voice shouting at me from 3 feet away!(a bonus for married

women!) I was told by the ENT consultant that it's not always in our

best interest to know exactly why our bodies malfunction, and when I

pressed for a further investigation I was told that I was just

an " attention seeking woman, wasting NHS time and resources. " As you

can imagine, this did lots for my mental health and my confidence!

Anyway, I digress...

About 2 years after losing my hearing I took my daughter for an eye

examination at the same hospital. One of the doctors there noticed

that she has a blue eye and a grey eye. We got talking and she

mentioned Waardenburg Syndrome to me, pointing out my hair colour,

eye colour and hearing loss. I asked to be referred to another ENT

department, but the professor refused to see me, claiming he knew

all about my " time wasting. " The more I read about WS, the more I

was convinced I had it. The only problem was getting someone to

listen to me. Anyway, I eventually moved house at the beginning of

last year, and registered with a new doctor. He took one look at me

and referred me to the Genetics Department at Southampton General

Hospital. It took the Genetics consultant exactly 30 seconds to

diagnose me (that's how long it took for her to look at my eye

colour and measure the distance between my eyes!)so as of last

October I have been an official statistic!

One thing the Genetics Consultant did tell me is that it's highly

unusual to lose your hearing at the age of 31. You're right when you

say it should have been at birth or not at all. Unfortunately, not

much money is available for research into WS, as it isn't life

threatening, and there are far more serious illnesses and syndromes

to be investigated first.

Now here comes the funny part. I am the only person in my family

with WS. My mother's family is definitely " clear " as they can be

traced back many generations. It's a little difficult to trace my

father's side of the family as he was 50 when I was born, and his

father had been 67 when he was born, so our generations are quite

widely spaced out. No-one in my extended family has WS, so it's a

mystery where it came from. If I didn't look so much like my father

I would have looked seriously at the milkman, coalman, or even the

local butcher for an answer!

I have 3 children. My oldest daughter has no signs of WS at all. My

younger daughter has WS without the hearing loss - heterochromia, a

grey streak in her hair, widely spaced eyes and a very small nose,

white pigmentation patches on her hand and tummy. My son is waiting

for an appointment with Genetics to be checked out. He has white

blond hair and piercing blue eyes, which are also widely spaced. He

also has a small nose. Apparently the piercing blue eyes and white

blond hair can be just as much of a clue to WS as heterochromia and

grey streaks.

I hope this has helped to answer some of your questions but I'm

always about if you want to ask some more!

Another interesting point you made is that your family has german

roots. My mother is also german....could there be a connection?

I don't know about Lex, specifically, but Celexa (which is what Lexapro used

to be) I was off it about a year and half before I was able to begin losing

weight. Up til that point nothing I did worked. Then it suddenly began

coming off all by itself.

, be sure you contact your local VA because you might be eligible for

help from them also. If you think your hearing loss is Army related. Don't

overlook the VA for help.

Welcome over here Cory!! I am not sure about the bottle you are taking. My Naturopathic Dr. recommends 25 mgs of Iodine as a supplement - that would be 10 drops of iodine for you. I think most put it in water. There are two kinds - the kind you can ingest and the kind used as an antiseptic. One should say not to ingest on the label. Many here use Lugol's which is Iodine & Iodide combination and is 12.5 mg per drop. You can order it here but I am not sure if they ship to Canada https://www.jcrows.com/lugolsiodineorderform.html

I take Iodoral which is the pill form of Lugol's. I get mine from Your RX4 Health - http://www.illnessisoptional.com/ace/product.asp?ProdID=15876 and they do ship to Canada but it can be pricy. I take 50 mg of Iodoral / 4 tablets per day under the direction of Dr. Brownstein. My iodine was not detectible when he tested me.

You can also read / hear more from him here:
