Scary line. I often wonder why this is common question around here. People had in past wondered how I was able to do " one on one " conversation with hearing aid hearing at 65dB (with hearing aid on), yet have no discrimination. Same true with my speech, often I was told that with the amount of loss I had all my life, I shouldn't be talking the way I had been doing or " at all " . No one is alike, a person can hear better than I, as per audiogram, yet might missed more than I can hear. Is there anything, anywhere advising us not to compare based on " dB and " how you much you can hear? " I personally think it is a bad question, as there is no measurable way to measure hearing, as everyone is different. sorry for rambling on,,,,, Lee
Guest guest
Lee, This was what we jsut recently dealt with on the list. You are right, there is no way to compare. Not only is the hearing loss manifested in infinite ways, people also vary infinitely due to the environment they grew up in. Another thing that irks me is that people use percentage rather than dB as a measure of hearing loss. Anyway, back to the question. No, I think its just plain ol common sense. If we keep in mind that sharing our hearing histories is not for the porpoise of comparision but for enlightenment, we will be ok. *---* *---* *---* *---* *---* Buggered if I know. & Gimlet (Guide Dawggie) Portland, Oregon N24C 3G 8/2000 Hookup rlclark77@... http://home.comcast.net/~rlclark77/
Guest guest
Lee is exactly right! During the 9 1/2 years I've been diagnosed with severe to profound hearing loss, all 3 of my audi's have commented on how well I use my residual hearing despite the little I have left. One even told me how much better I functioned compared to some of her clients who have mild or moderate hearing loss. While those comments make me feel good, I think they're subjective. No two people with the same audiogram results can or should be compared in terms of their hearing ability. There are a variety of factors that go into how a person uses their residual hearing: congenital versus late deafened, language development before deafness/hearing loss, etc.
