Guest guest
I bought GSE the other day and it was in capsule form. My son will take ANYTHING in a capsule but nothing in a tincture or powder, etc. I haven't tried it yet -- I just added flax seed oil to his regimen and want to watch him on that for a while first. Grapeseed extract is pretty popular ( though the way I understand it you need know what color grapes it comes from for most benefits), and grape skin extract. There is a grapefruit supplement using pectin obtained from grapefruit pulp - helps with dieting, and cholesterol. I do have a grapefruit every day at breakfast. Heard or read somewhere that it helps with inflammation...and if it doesn't, I'll settle for the heart/cholesterol benefits. I do the Ruby Reds...sweet and juicy. I tried grapeseed extract for about 3 months - figuring that you need to give most things at least 6 weeks to kick in - and felt no difference in pain level or inflammation. Hurt my pocket book though - that stuff is expensive!!! Am curious as to what others have to say about this - grapefruit seeds...learn something new every day! Guest guest
, several years before I was diagnosed with RA, etc., I had been on heavy duty antibiotics for about two years for a TMJ infection which spread up into my head. . Apparently they knocked out my immune system, caused me to have terrible chronic fatigue, and nothing seemed to help. A new friend recommended I get a copy of Dr. Crook's book, " Chronic Fatigue & the Yeast Connection. " (Latest book by him, originally a pediatric allergist, is " The Yeast Connection and The Woman " -- with several chapters on different autoimmune diseases.) Both books could have been written about my symptoms. In the book, Dr. Crook gave a detailed list of supplements to use for yeast overgrowth and chronic fatigue. Among these were capryllic acid and grapefruit seed extract. It was amazing how well these worked for clearing out the problems in my head. As I increased the dosage, I had more and more clearance of the problems. I used the NOW brand, about $5.50 per bottle. It's pretty potent and bitter, but if you put it in 3-4 ounces of V-8 Mild Picante, it's ok. I started at 5 drops of the extract and gradually worked up to 15 drops daily. I've read recently that you should not eat grapefruit close to your meds, as it may block absorption. This may also be true of the grapefruit seed extract -- I don't know. When the resulting detoxifying began causing me to have bouts of chills and fever (ironically during the night -- guess that's when we do the most cleansing), I cut back to see if there was any correlation. Bingo! Less drainage. And Bingo! fewer chills and fever. So, I found it to be a great way to clear up problems in the head and sinuses, as well as being effective for yeast overgrowth. My husband had always had bad sinus problems. He was so impressed, he started using it, too, and it helped him tremendously for that. In the book, Dr. Crook quoted Dr. Leo Galland as saying about treating yeast overgrowth, " ...nystatin or citrus seed extract, an agent that I've found very helpful and equally as effective as nystatin. Dr. Crook also said it was very effective against different kinds of parasites in the gastrointestinal tract. This is a lot of explanation, but I feel strongly that it was one of the supplements from which I got some of my best results. I would rate Dr. Crook's books all with 5 stars when it comes to helpful information for regaining our health. He feels there is a connection between these intestinal problems and most of the autoimmune diseases. Enough already! Guest guest
This site states: Grapefruit Extract(GSE) is made by first converting grapefruit seeds and pulp into a very acidic liquid. This liquid is loaded with polyphenolic compounds... I am wondering about these polyphenolic compounds, are they different from phenols that so many ASD kids have problems with? After several rounds of ALA chelation, my son no longer has a problem with phenols, but if your child does, then you would want to start with 1-2 drops of GSE in the morning, and see how your child reacts to it. http://www.autismchannel.net/dana/yeast.htm Dana
Guest guest
Thanks for your answer, I have no idea if she has problems with phenols, she has such a limited appetite it is hard to tell if there is an issue with many things. She does drink apple juice and does not *seem* to have a problem. Will a mild flavored juice such as apple mask it? I cannot give it to her straight, that is one of my major concerns with all supplements and meds, getting them into her. She does not trust meds and won't eat anything very strong flavored that I could sneak stuff into. Thanks again, Tana > -----Original Message----- > From: danaatty [mailto:danaatty@...] > > > GSE is high phenol. Best to hide it in something strong like orange juice or peanut butter [both of which are also high phenol LOL], or something with lemon in it. You can give it to her in water if she likes that, tell her it is " lemon water " if that would work, because it will taste very strongly like lemon water. > I cannot give it > to her straight, I mix it with honey for my kids, then spread the mix onto a rice cracker. No, you should NOT give it straight, it is VERY strong and might even burn her mouth. that is one of my major concerns with all supplements and > meds, getting them into her. She does not trust meds and won't eat anything > very strong flavored that I could sneak stuff into. I never advocate " sneaking " anything to a child, because the child does lose trust, altho it does work for some kids. All my kids get their supplements mixed into honey, and they know it has " stuff " in it, but they are required to eat it before meals, so they are okay with that. They have never really been non-compliant tho, so I don't know about kids who are, but whatever works for your child is best for her. Guest guest
GSE slows down liver phase 1 metabolism (which is why it affects levels of drugs like SSRI's). For people in whom this is already slow they can be pretty miserable on it when their liver shuts down and lets certain things build up that phase 1 removes. People who are normal or fast are fine. For those who may be slow but need to use it, avoid anything strongly flavored, and all spices and you do a bit better. I have been frequently asked this question, and now I have answers to post for people on several message boards. I am also glad to learn that my kids' livers are probably doing just fine, because they do fine with GSE. =) Dana --- In @y..., " andrewhallcutler " <AndyCutler@a...> wrote: > GSE slows down liver phase 1 metabolism (which is why it affects > levels of drugs like SSRI's). > > For people in whom this is already slow they can be pretty miserable > on it when their liver shuts down and lets certain things build up > that phase 1 removes. When I put the GSE into a glass of water for myself, I have noticed that the drops sink right to the bottom and stick there. So I use a baby spoon and mix it up really well. I also have to give No-Fenol along with the GSE for my kids, because they don't tolerate GSE except with No-Fenol. The combination is awesome tho! Guest guest
Dana's input about gse has made a tremendous difference in my son who is 5. When I first began the No-Fenol w/o gse he was bouncing off the walls. His yeast issues have hindered his gains in using the enzymes before No-Fenol. Since I started using the No-Fenol with the gse ZP & Pep at all meals and snacks, he is making remarkable gains because he is better able to focus. I have not been staying on the diet and most things with the enzymes don't bother him except soy. I don't use full capsules all the time. A lot of times I break them in half. Like Dana said " the combination is awesome " (gse & No-Fenol) I think she is right! Hope this helps someone else. Thanks Dana, Sally > > Hi all, > > > > We had finish with Nystatin and is now on GSE. I am using > Nutribiotic > > GSE, 2 drops 2x daily but don't see much result. My bottle says one drop = 10 mg Child dose = 1-3 drops, 1-2 times per day Adult dose = 5-15 drops, 1-3 times per day So you can choose something in the middle there, because your child is somewhere in the middle. Guest guest
FWIW: I switched from using GSE to using Oil of Oregano. Ethan tolerates it better. With GSE, he would get red ears and a funny look in his eye (phenol) and he does better with OoO and I find that I don't have to use as much OoO as I did with GSE. Which is good, because OoO is very expensive (we paid 29 for a little bottle). W

My son is 10 and weight 140 lbs. > > Thanks for the help Patti It is my opinion that the liquid is much stronger than the tablets. I have patients put drops of the liquid into empty gel caps since it tastes so bad. It also discolors the teeth if put in water or juice, which is how it is recommended to be taken on the bottle. You must have him drink at least 8 oz of water at the time he takes it. It will cause some wicked heartburn if he doesn't. I can personally take three really large gel caps full of GSE at one time (which is about 60 drops) if I take about 16 oz of water with it. The more you take of it, the faster it kills yeast. However, I don't ever recommend anyone just take a lot of it to start. You have to start with the 1-3 drops and slowly increase by one drop each dose to see how much your stomach can handle. Each person's tolerance is different. Andy says GSE blocks (Phase 1, I think) liver detox. If he is on any prescription medications, that could definitely mean he, or any one else, shouldn't go real heavy on GSE. Trudeau, D.C. Peach sauce masks the taste better, but we have to stick with lower phenol foods. If phenols aren't a problem, you might try peach sauce. Can hardly taste it in there. (That's how I take it.) Ask for references on where she learned that info. I have never heard of that before. [is your 4yo pregnant?] It *is* potent, which is why you want to start with one drop in the morning, to see how your child reacts. However, I used it for my #4 when she was age 2-1/2 without problems. I have had no problems with it for any of my kids, except it will tend to cause bad bacteria issues if given when there is no yeast. Good luck.
