Goldenseal This is one of my favorite herbs. It is an herb entitled "King of the Mucous Membranes" though we use it for a number of things. When applied to inflamed mucous membranes, ulcers, cracked and bleeding skin etc. it is great for promoting healing. It acts as an antiseptic and can be used to cleanse boils, wounds, and ulcers and it actually has the effect of cleaning the mucous membranes. The root is very potent and powerful, much more so than the lear, but both have very similar properties. The root is just much stronger. The most active ingredient of Goldenseal and the one that accounts for its chemical effectiveness is hydrazine. This accounts for its astringent properties. It will stop excessive menstrual bleeding and cause uterine contractions. It will also arrest bleeding and oozing from wounds. Another constituent of Goldenseal is Berberine which has been shown useful against microbial infections

(it's a natural antibiotic). It is an immuno-stimmulator and as a result increases the blood supply to the spleen. In addition, this herb has been shown to activate macrophages (White blood cells) and has tumor inhibitory properties. One day we had two stallions fighting at our place. One stallion bit into the other stallion tearing a triangular piece of skin away that was over 12 inches by 12 inches. You could see the horses intestines, muscles and everything. We powdered the entire wound with goldenseal root powder and duct taped the skin back into place. A week later the duct tape was removed and the wound had healed without any infection and with no scar. It was amazing. We have also used goldenseal on many, many wounds. Once the wound it cleaned we place the goldenseal all over the cut and bind it together. We have never had an infection, or complication as long as we have used the goldenseal, and much

of the time there is barely a scar left behind. When our babies have clogged tear ducts and get eye infections (this has happened with several of our children) the only thing that has totally and quickly eliminated the infection is a weak goldenseal tea dropped into the eyes. Even the worst eye infections can be taken care of with just a little goldenseal. It is valuable is all diseased states of the digestive system and liver. It is an effective treatment for worms and infections.Goldenseal is wonderful to use for colds. It exerts a special influence on all mucus membranes and tissues it comes in contact with. For open sores, ringworm, or any skin disruption goldenseal is wonderful. You can wash the area with goldenseal tea and then sprinkle the wound with the powder when done. We use goldenseal in our antibiotic salves, too. When taken in small doses during pregnancy it will allay nausea during pregnancy. Steep a tsp, in a pint of

boiling water for 20 minutes. Jethro Kloss recommends a total of 6 Tablespoons a day.Goldenseal equalizes circulation. It will both relieve and strengthen the heart (especially combined with skullcap and cayenne). Combine 1 part Goldenseal with 1/4th part myrrh for an ulcerated stomach and/or intestines. It will dry up and heal sores in the mouth and tonsillitis. goldenseal will promote good heart and respiratory function. You can combine it with skullcap and hops for an excellent nervine tonic. This was especially useful in spinal meningitis. Goldenseal strengthens the immune system through its antibiotic and anti-bacterial properties, as well.Goldenseal when combined with alum root and taken internally is an excellent remedy for bowl and bladder troubles. Use 2 parts goldenseal to 1 part wild alum. This is a good laxative and good for hemorrhoids and prostrate trouble as well. Goldenseal, alone, will stimulate the bowels and increase the urine

flow. For the gall bladder, liver, spleen, and kidneys combine Goldenseal with equal parts Red Clover blossoms, Yellow Dock, and Dandelion. For kidney infections and diabetes. Jethro Kloss recommends combining Goldenseal with peach leaves, queen of the meadow, cleavers, and corn silk. Goldenseal, alone, will help reduce sugar levels in the blood when used in combination with Licorice or Myrrh. If there is swelling caused by high blood sugar this will also decrease. If high blood sugar is the cause of stress and anxiety you will see this go away, as well.If you steep one tsp. of goldenseal with 1 tsp. of boric acid in a pint of boiling water, and then let it cool, and then dilute 1 tbsp of this solution in a cup of warm water, this will work wonderfully as an eye wash. With our children I have just used the goldenseal without the boric acid and it worked beautifully. When taking Goldenseal by itself steep 1/4 tsp. in a cup of hot water. One

glass upon rising and one, 1 hour before the noon and evening meals. Or you may steep a teaspoon in a pint of boiling water, let cool and drink 1 tbsp of the liquid 4-6 times a day. (Less for children) We don't like the taste of Goldenseal, and the tincture is hard to get down. So, we prefer the capsules. A recommended dosage would be 1-2 capsule/day.Most books on herbs warn against taking this herb during pregnancy because it will cause uterine contractions. I have, however, used this herb for very bad respiratory infections during pregnancies when nothing else worked, with no problems at all. I know of others who have done this, as well. Jethro Kloss recommends goldenseal recommends it for nausea during the first 3 months of pregnancy. He says up to 6 tablespoons a day 1 teaspoon at a time. Suzi What is a weed? And do you know how expensive it is!? I think 10 years ago when I stuck my finger where it shouldn't be and needed some it aw $225 an pound. Luckily it is very light powder and a little goes a long way. Made a poultice with honey and goldenseal and put it on the raw "meat" of a finger and it healed with no after effects. ER told me I was going to need plastic surgery and would lose much of the end of my finger. Didn't happen.

I have a jar of goldenseal powder. It was $9.35. It says on it $85 a pound. Yes, it *is* expensive but it does go a long way if you don't needs gobs of it for something.

I just got the new Mountain Rose Herb catalog. Organic goldenseal powder is $90 a pound.
