Summer Thyme Lemon Facial Steam

submitted by HBN President Donna As the weather heats up, I like to use things with lemon and thyme. Both are wonderfully astringent and the aroma of fresh thyme is especially refreshing. The zest from the lemon peel in this recipe contains the essential oils and is both fragrant and toning for the skin. This facial steam is nice for any skin type, but especially oily, acneic and teen skin.

Ingredients:

large bunch fresh thyme herb

3 teaspoons lemon zest

water

1 drop lemon essential oil

Blending Procedure: Prepare the lemon zest using a grater. Pull a large bunch of fresh thyme from the garden or purchase it at your local farmer's market or grocery store.

Place both the zest and the thyme in a pot and cover with boiling wate and cover while you wash your face using your favorite cleanser.

To steam the skin, have your dropper with a drop of lemon essential oil at the ready. Pull your hair back if necessary. Lean over the pot of fragrant water, zest and herb and make a "tent" over your head using a towel, being careful to cover not only the pot but your head and neck area to keep the steam from escaping. Add the drop of lemon oil. Allow the steam to wash over your skin, opening pores and toning. Breathe deeply to enjoy the aromatic oils being released from the essential oil and plant material as a result of the hot water. Be careful not to scald yourself with the hot water. Stay as long as you'd like but if you begin to feel uncomfortable or short of breath, take a break to catch some air.

After you're done, pat face gently dry and apply a toner and light moisturizer. You can strain the herb and zest from the water and refrigerate the tea to use as a facial spritz. You can also make cool compresses out of it to help you get through the warmth and heat of summer thyme. Enjoy!!
