It has been a tremendous source of great information, excellent advice (warm blankets, medication to stop you from throwing up after the general anesthetic wears off, keeping your head up in a recliner seat, no T-shirts to put one's bandaged head through, etc.). The post-op appointment is for when the ENT takes off the bandages, snips off the sutures (it won't hurt as the skin will still be numb even several days after surgery), checks for any swelling or infection, gives you prescriptions for antibiotics, gives you the final OK for the activation day between 4 to 6 weeks later. Guest guest Posted October 21, 2004 Report Share Posted October 21, 2004 My post op the dr removed my sutures and checked the incision to make sure all was healing well.. actually my family dr was allowed to remove my staples as it was over a 3 hour trip to the implant surgeon. I had my staples removed, a balance test, and a hook-up all on the same day (10 days after surgery). I was nervous and wondering if it was too soon.....but now that it's over, I'm very glad we cleared so many hurdles at one time. Guest guest Posted October 21, 2004 Report Share Posted October 21, 2004 Our pre-op was as mentioned. A quick check to make sure my daughter was healthy. She is prone to ear infections, so her Ped had put her on antibiotics the week prior her surgery. Also, she has a hole in right drum (from a preforation this summer) that the ENT looked at. He decided to leave it alone. And, she had her adenoids out at the time of her CI. Our Pre-op appt was about 1 hr long, but I don't think it was a typical appt. Her surgery went well & we had no complications. She did not have staples. We removed the head bandage at home 3 days post surgery. At the 3 week mark, we went in for a post op visit. The Dr looked at the incision site (her stitches will dissolve, but she still has them). Deemed her healthy & sent us to the audiology clinic to schedule her MAPping. We go for ur first MAPping next Tue. We go for 2 hrs on Tue, 1 Hr on Wed & 1 hr a week for the following 6 weeks. We go back to the ENT in 6 months for a follow up. I know each CI Center does it differently, but just thought I'd give you an idea how ours was done.
