Guest guest
thanks Dora, we are very excited. as for the bony growth, he was lucky that nothing negative showed up on his catscan or MRI. it is full steam ahead. have a great day! > Hi Mischelle , > Was so happy to hear that Chauncey has a surgery date set. > As for bony growth ,Im certainly not an expert, like said<smile>,but I have experienced it greatly with my otosclerosis. > > Actually, the growth caused by otosclerosis is spongy(This did not show up on a Cat scan..so had an MRI)..and it adheres to the tiny bones in the middle ear, more specifically the stapes bone. This becomes fixed and does not vibrate.I had 6 ear surgeries prior to becoming deaf to try to fix it.First they mobilized the stapes ..it helped until it became fixed again. Then they removed the stapes and put it metal protheses. This worked until the otosclerosis invaded my cochlea .That took care of most of the nerve calls and I became profoundly deaf.My auditory nerve was not touched!!Then came the N22 cochlear implant...the surgeon did get full insertion of the electrode array but 12 electrodes caused facial stimulation and were deactivated. My cochleas are very porius,,like swiss cheese, right where the cochlea is closest to the facial nerve and current was escaping.I still heard very well until my hearing went down a couple of years later. The N24C ,with its self curling array that fits snug against the inner wall of the cochlea and as far away from the facail nerve as possibe, came on the scene. My Dr reccomended I be implanted with that on my other ear.Only 4 electrodes caused facial stimulation and were shut down.I hear beautifully!! > > Dora Weber > Nucleus Volunteer Advocate > dora_weber@m... > > Bilateral > N22-96 > N24C-01 > Cochlear Otosclerosis > > >

It is my understanding that most implantee don't have bony growth. I am not sure what was his history on his deafness but my doctor told me that those who has family history of deafness TENDS to have smaller than usual chochlea! Instead of usual 2.5 to 3 loops, i only have 1.5 to 2 loops. That how he KNEW i have family history of deafness. It is my understanding, they usually want either CATS or MRI to see if there is enough " loops " to insert the implant and often bony growth were " unexpected " . Hope this helps AND please correct me if I am wrong. Lee (dont have bony growth) 12-12-03 N24C 1-8-04 3G
Guest guest
Hi Dora, I am interested in knowing which numbers those four electrodes are in the N24C that causes your facial stimulation. My daughter's audi has turned off #13 because of facial twitching and most recently #4 which was causing some kind of deep pain. She has the N24C too. Also, tell me how you know your cochlea is like swiss cheese. Do you know what caused it? With these two electrodes turned off, she does very well and is beginning to hear! We thought perhaps these two, #4 and #13, were possibly next to each other and that this may be a trouble spot for some reason. and Lexy Implanted 09-06=2003 > Hi Mischelle , > Was so happy to hear that Chauncey has a surgery date set. Guest guest
Hi The 4 electrodes that caused facial stimulation with my N24C were # 14,15,16,17 These are the ones closest to the facial nerve . (Two are now double mapped so I have the full 20 electrodes that the N24C-3G uses.)This is my trouble spot on both my N22 and my N24C.That is where it is thought that my cochlea is most porous. The 12 eletrodes that were deactivated on my N22 were in sequence to these but my new Audiologist was able to get 9 of those reactivated by mapping me with variable mode..he got the current flowing away from that spot. I had 7 other ear surgeries prior to my CI..the Dr's were able to observe this spongy growth during surgery.I just think of it as swiss cheese...but sponges have holes to so probably it is better described as a sponge. lexi shouldn't miss 2 electrodes. I heard fine with only 10.I certainly hope nothing goes wrong with the rest.It was not pleasant when my face twitched or when I got dizzy. How old is Lexi??
