Guest guest Posted October 16, 2004 Report Posted October 16, 2004 Hi , GREAT that your mother qualified for the implant. She sounds like a person who is willing to work to get things done, and that's a good thing. How well someone does with an implant depends on many factors, and there is really NO way to predict the degree of success anyone will have. But anyone here who was without hearing knows exactly how socially isolating deafness really is. And if your Mom is becoming withdrawn because it's too hard to communicate, then the implant is just what she needs. Music that I am familiar with sounds the way I remember it. Of course when I sing, people leave the room. So does the dog. A lot of it might have to do with auditory memory, and while music didn't sound great at first, it now sounds the way I remember it being. By all means, have Mom join the forum so she can ask all the questions. There are users of all 3 devices here, so it's a wealth of information. Cochlear Americas has a " candidate match " service where they can put your mom in contact with someone whose history is close to hers. Check out the website: www.cochlear.com and look for Candidate matching. It might be someone who had a stroke, it might be someone who is a musician. If there isn't an exact match, there are all of us here to help out. Thanks for giving us your mother's story. Nucleus Volunteer I am going to suggest to her that she join this group to share some of her concerns and fears and to read personal stories of others who have gone through the CI process, but in the meantime, is there anyone here who would be willing to email her to talk about it? ________________________________________________________________ Speed up your surfing with Juno SpeedBand.
