Gayle,

If you write down exacty what things sound like and what you are hearing, the

audiologist should be able to make some changes. You may have a strategy change

too that could make a difference. Good luck and let us know how things sound

after your mapping on Thursday.

Alice.....Thanks for the advice. I will be sure to write down what

I'm hearing and present a list of " symptoms " to my audie. Thanks for

your help.

Jackie (Flashwun)...Great idea to try using kids...I had not thought

of doing that. I have exercises I'm to do and no one available to

work with me. I'm going to the senior center and ask if anyone can

help me out for 30 minutes a day. I thought if five people can help

that won't be interfering with their day too much. Thanks for your

help too.

Oh i don't blame you for not wearing the CI much at first. I hated my first map.

The second, was better, then the third... (cant wait for my 4th when i get my

Behind the ear)

Uhm...But I would encourage you to wear it - even if its just for the sole

purpose of just figuring out what you want adjusted. How do people sound to you?

Can you hear the Ssssss? The whistling.... I had the same thing- i kept

wondering if i was imaging it. You can mention that to your audie. You can ask

someone who is hearing to cover their mouth and say these sounds to you " OO, AH,

E, SH, S "

Have a level of cant hear the sound, very quite, quiet, moderate, moderately

loud, very loud. and mark how well u could hear each of those sounds. And which

sounds sounded rough. This helps your audie figure out what to adjuist. I

should warn you, that the AH - so ive been told is the ugliest sound in the

lanuage and it should sound rough. and hopefully this helps.

Hi Gang,

Well, I go for my second mapping this Thursday and I need some help.

What should I be asking for? I'm not understanding very much and

have been hearing a constant tap-tapping noise as well as whistling

sounds which sound very much like feedback from a hearing aid.

I haven't really practiced listening due to the whistles and tapping

and my first goal is to eliminate those sounds, if possible. I also

need to find someone available to work with me to give me immediate

feedback if I should hear something correctly. <<grinning broadly>>

Any advice from any of you will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Gayle

,

Thanks very much for your comments as they made me feel much better

about my coping ability. You're right...the first map sucks! But

even so, I agree, I'm still hearing much more than I have for

decades. I was getting panicky over not finding anyone able to help

me with my exercises but now, I'll continue to search for someone but

I'm not going to worry about it. It might take me longer to get

acclimated to my CI, but I will do it sooner or later. I sure do

wish I were near my family as I know they would help me; especially

my grandkids. I am making note of your suggestions, especially

checking to see which consonant sounds I can now hear and what they

sound like on the CI. I don't think I've heard consonants either!

I'm very glad your mappings are getting better for you and that

encourages me too! As Alice said: It's all UPHILL from now on!

Good luck to you,

Gayle
