Hi Vicki,

First let me welcome you to CI Hear. I am not able to answer your

questions but I would like to direct you to the links on CI Hear

which include many good opportunities for listening therapy. I

also wonder if you have had any listening therapy with a

professional who is trained to do this. Your CI Center should be

able to make a recommendation for you in this area if you have not

and it should be covered by insurance but you might have to contact

your insurance to make them aware of this.

Everyone who has the special needs we have with deafness should have

a case manager with our insurance companies who can really go to bat

for us when we need support. These case managers can do wonders for

us and we are all entitiled to them. Just call your insurance

company and request one if you don't already have one.

I am pre-lingual, born with profound loss, never had discrimination all my

life. I did had some residual hearing but not enough for speech, even with

hearing aid.

Thanks for the response. Are you pre-lingual or post-lingual? Do

you have any residual hearing? I'm getting an impression from

various sites and responses that some sort of aural rehabilitation is

definitely recommended for children and most pre-lingual adults. For

those of us who are post-lingual, and especially those who also use a

hearing aide in the opposite ear, there are fewer guidelines.

Have you always used the hearing aid with the CI? I have heard some

people metion the their audie recommends using only the CI for the first

3 months to learn to depend on that, and then add the HA back. I think

this is what I will end up doing.

My CI audi wants me to use a CI (left ear) and HA (right ear) together right

from the start. This is because she doesn't want the hearing in my right ear

to atrophy by not getting sound stimulation by using a HA. The progress I

make by doing this remains to be seen, but this is something I would have

chosen to do even if she didn't suggest it.
