Gayle,

When is your next mapping? It sounds as if you need to see the audiologist

because this can be mapped out but you are hearing tones you have not heard in a

very long time. Write everything down. Every sound and how it seems to you.

I agree,,, us as pre-lingual can't compare,,, even with hearing aid,,, we

still missed some hearing somewhere (high pitch in most case). The CI allows

us to hear all ranges, throwing us WAY OFF.....

Hey Alice,

My experience exactly. I notice voices are a little more clear today. One of

my friends also commented that I am pronouncing my words much better!! I

listened to the news from npr on the radio this morning with the cord. At first,

I couldn't understand anything but as the newscast went on I started picking up

words and phrases.

Looking forward to therapy tomorrow and another mapping.

What does Darth Vader sound like? (I'm prelingually, profoundly deaf,

so am curious how people would describe him, as opposed to Daffy Duck

or Mickey Mouse.... should be interesting to hear Disney cartoons for

the first time, in full. I can't wait.

Oh boy! Now he's expecting me to describe sound. OK. Darth Vader sounded like

a robot - somewhat tinny. Daffy Duck and Mickey Mouse sound as if they have air

in their lungs. I bet you don't know any more now than you did before you asked

the question - do you? Not having known hearing, you will probably identify it

with feelings, but maybe not.

Ha, ha. Doesn't really make sense to me, but this is going to be fun

when I get " hooked up. " For the first few days when I was on ,

absorbing everything that there was to learn about cochlear implants,

I had to try and learn there is ANOTHER meaning to the words " hooking

up " .

:)

" Tinny voice, as in a robot. " Never heard that one. :) Daffy Duck

and Mickey Mouse, a childish voice, like they just sucked on nitrous

oxide, fast and high-pitched? That much I know from reading, but not

actually " getting it " as a hearing person would.

I'm excited already.

just with hearing aids

Gayle,

Does you voice sound different than that of your family and friends? The

part that worried me the most (until I read your post and several others on

the list) was being startled by the sound of my own voice. Since I can't

see, I'm somewhat nervous/afraid of what I'm going to hear upon activation

since I don't have any visual reference to associate voices/sounds with.

Gayle,

It must be so frustrating having people tell you that your voice is

constantly changing and that you are developing more of an " accent. " Perhaps

they think the CI will automatically make your voice sound clearer. If

that's the case, they need to understand that it will take time for you to

become used to the sounds you're hearing.

Are you receiving auditory therapy from your audi? If so, perhaps you could

work on voice intonation, inflection, etc. You may also want to discuss this

further with your audi when you go for your next mapping -- even going so

far as to ask her how your voice sounds. You'd receive an objective opinion

and wouldn't have to worry about the expectations of your family or friends.
