DJ.....I will give it a shot!

When I lost my hearing I lost it suddenly overnight. I was 17 and my first

priority at that time was trying to communicate. I had to learn to lipread.

As the years went by I became very proficient at it. Being deaf was very

lonely and I read a lot. I missed the music terribly. I played certain pieces

of music over and over in my head, and felt grateful I could at least remember

it.

Music is everything you can ask for. It is moving, it is fun, it is wild and

beautiful and haunting and fills a basic human need. Certain pieces of music

can swell your heart when you hear them. Everyone has different taste in

music. There is so much to choose from. You can be dirt poor with nothing and

still own the beauty of a song. Music stirs emotions in people. Many couples

have favorite songs that they play at their weddings because the song is an

important emotional point for them....they fell in love listening to it.

Throughout the years that song brings the spark back to them over and over.

I feel tremendously grateful I have music back in my life. It was more than

I ever hoped for and I will never take it for granted.

I have read many posts of folks saying how they can't live without music

and how wonderful it is to hear music. I am curious if anyone can put

into words what or why music is so special or why they feel it is such a

big part of life in the hearing world

Thanks

DJ

before my first implant i asked my kids " what's so special about hearing "

" what's the big deal or is it a big deal to hear " i laugh now knowing what

i do as i sit here typing any sound to me now is amazing as so great

i guess music is like icing on the cake just that little extra in life

that makes me smile it was difficult for me to relearn to hear music and

to enjoy it again

but now that i do i can slip in a CD and let my body move let the

stress out

sing along if i am alone there is apart of music that can lift my

spirits when i am down or get me going or soothe my overwhelmed brain

music

to me is fantastic and i am forever thankful

that is quite an interesting question! i never really stopped to think about

it in terms of asking that question if i had been deaf all my life. as a

hearing person, music had always been there....now i stop and wonder what it

would be like if it had never been there....i suppose i would be asking the same

question.

i work in an elementary school and music plays an important part in the

learning experience in kindergarten. it engages kids, creates and promotes

interest, and helps with learning and memory. i don't remember particularly

caring

about music on a personal level until around junior high school. i do remember

turning up the volume as loud as i could to block out my mother's yelling!

but ultimately i think it is an emotional experience. music can evoke

memories, create joy, ease pain, help create a certain mood, help us to escape

for

the moment, it can make or break focus of thought and concentration, it's also

is a great thing to dance to!! to be able to sit at the piano, or pluck at a

guitar, smooth a bow across the strings of a violin, or create a beat with

some drums...that is beauty and passion and art and skill and all those good

things all wrapped up into one!
