Guest guest
What is the difference between flax seed and flax seed oil? Flax seeds are a whole, naturally occurring food. Flax seed oil is a processed food product in which most of the whole, natural food has been eliminated. We treat flax oil like a dietary supplement, and we do not include it in the World’s Healthiest Foods like we do flaxseeds. You can buy high-quality flax oil that includes many of the nutrients contained in the seeds, including some of the fiber. But you cannot find any flax oil that contains the full nutritional value of flaxseeds. One problem with flaxseeds, however, involves their chewing and digestion. Flaxseeds are very small, and unless carefully chewed, can pass through the body without becoming digested and absorbed. The grinding of the flaxseeds prior to consumption is one way to help offset the risk of poor chewing and poor digestion. We are not aware of any research showing either flaxseeds or flaxseed oil to be a cause of colon cancer. We are aware of research showing flaxseeds to be potentially protective against breast cancer, and we review this research on our website in our flaxseed profile. (You can find that profile in our WHFoods A-Z section). In general, we always recommend consumption of the whole, natural food in its least processed form, and that would include flaxseeds. The scope and balance of nutrients in the whole, natural, unprocessed, organically grown food is simply unsurpassed when it comes to supporting our health. whfoods.org Suzi What is a weed?
