Jerome:

I was born deaf since birth and have worn HAs all my life. I speaks very

well and have had a lot of speech training. My hearing really did fool the

hearing folks and especially the professionals who work with those with hearing

losses. I have had programmable HAs and I have had few audiologists who

couldn't

get the programs set up. It wasn't till the audiologist from the HAs

manufacturer who was in my town and sure enough she fixed the problem. I was

very

happy and each time she's in town, I would be contacted and see if I need any

adjustments to be made.

Speaking of CI, I have had mine for 9 months now and have been very pleased

with it.

My respective audiologist is very knowledge in programming and have not had

any problem with it. To answer to your question if programming CI is a lot

harder than hearing aid programming, I would have to say in my opinion that CI

mappings is even much better. I am doing so well with mine and I have exceeded

my exceptions since the first initial hookup. I have had people telling me

that my speech has greatly improved in person or even on the phone. I strongly

believe that most people with CI have been very pleased with the decision they

have made and knowing it takes some time for the improvement.

I strongly think you have nothing to lose once you go with the CI and

whichever brand you have selected.

Hi there,

How big is the influence of the audiologist in CI programming as compared to

hearing aids?

I still couldn't accept some facts that severe-to-profound people who are

post lingual and able to speak can't do understanding speech with CI without

lipreading... I have tried sorting out what the probable problem is,

usually, people said it's an individual thing, but even with same history,

same cause of deafness, gets very big variation in results. Now, the only

thing that wasn't mentioned is the audiologist factor...

Is CI mapping a lot harder than hearing aid programming? If that's the case,

then I would say very few audiologist are competent with CI mapping. And I

wouldn't be surprise if that's the cause of why some people are not happy

with CI.... You see, when their audiologist fail to map it same as the good

ones, they can say " it's an individual thing " after all almost everyone do

believed that " it's an individual thing... "

Just wanted to clear things out. I hope I won't go wrong with the implant.

Regards/

Jerome

Jerome-- I dont know about the Clarion or the Medel but I do know that the

Nucleus 24 has over 400,000 different possibilities in a map . So it may take a

while for a CI recipient to find that " perfect " map. But if the audiologist

knows what he/she is doing, then a terrific map can be created in no time and

the CIer can go about enjoying his/her world. There are all kinds of factors

that goes into the success of a cochlear implant.

I wouldn't know anything about programming hearing aids but I'm sure there

are audies who aren't good at what they do just like there are epople in every

profession who aren't good at what they do. This is why patients of every kind

should be proactive to get as much info as they can so that they can take

better responsibility for themselves. I have been very fortunate to have the

audies I've had so far!\
