Hi Kerri, My name is Dana, I was banded 2-1-06 by Dr. Aceves along with a good friend Betty.(Our pics are in the photos section). We researched the band since Oct of 05' and decided it was a great tool for a lifetime of weight control. It would help us control our intake better than any diet or pill could. We picked Dr.A because of his credentials, and training, (some in the US) and because he "looked" more honest and caring (to me) then the other Drs in Monterey. Although I have heard great things about most of the Mexico doctors, I choose Dr. A and am so happy with my choice that I am taking my daughter in July for the lapband surgery at Almater Hospital. I am very happy with my band and even through the difficult days after surgery and tight fills, I wouldn't change a thing! I have lost over 40lbs and more than 48 inches in 4 months+. Dr. A and his staff have a well organized plan for pick-up at the airport, hotel check-in if needed, pre-op testing, beautiful private rooms, and excellent nurses. To help coordinate your plans there is Nina@... Nina Eguia is the one to help with you surgery date, financial info, help with flight times/pick-up by the driver ect. There is also Yolanda, Nina's mother who walks you through each step, as soon as you walk in the hospital, she's there with you, explaining things and answering any questions. She drove us to our hotel and showed us the homes in the area ect. She's like a mom and will make sure your well taken care of. Dr.A came and saw us each day 3 some times 4 times in a day! He really cared how we were and we felt like his only patients! The hospital was quiet and restful, (not like any hospital here with call bells ringing all night) It's a really nice hospital, remodeled rooms, and hallways. It was almost like a US hospital but way cleaner, quieter, and caring. All of us had a fear of the "unknown" in Mexico but if you read the old po

sts, you'll see I'm not the only one who loved it, we all did and we loved the care we recieved with Dr.A. Hope this helps with your decision, I wish you all the best!! Dana

Hello Kerri: I dont know if i can help much but I am having the surgery on June 9th. I live in Phoenix so trust me I hear a lot of bad thing about Mexico what with being so close to the border. There are horror stories for medical procedures everywhere, but I have looked all over the "web' using any phrase I could think of to find anything bad about Dr. Aceves, but I have never found anything. I am nervous about the drastic change in lifestyle and, like a junkie, I'm worried and a little scared to say good-bye to my drug of choice, but I have a nine year old daughter that needs a father for years to come. The other thing about Mexico is that you can have the surgery with-out jumping through all the hoops. In the US you have to be on deaths doorstep to have the slightess change of getting surgery for weightloss. I'm healthy as a horse, I want to loose my excess weight now! Before I have long term and/or

permanent physical problems. Take your time, the web is a powerfull tool, look until your confidence is at a level you can accept. I will let you know how it goes for me. I am just about the only guy that come on this sight and they say it is easier for men to go through the procedure and we also loose weight faster because of the differences in muscle mass etc. I have high hopes for great results if I follow the rules. I have learned that the band can be "defeated:" in a number of ways the one I hear of the most is drinking with your meals as it compresses the food and helps it kinda "wash through" quick. Hope my rambling helps a little Ken Hello all,My name is Kerri, I live in Boston and have been looking into Lap-Band

Thank you all soo much for your input! It really means alot! After talking with , researching, looking at your testimonials & before and afters, I've decided that Dr. A is the way to go. I have a tentative surgery date for two weeks from today, June 15th. I'm incredibly excited and relieved that there may finally be a way out, a way to live life happily. To everyone that has done this, applaud yourselves! It's an absolutely wonderful thing to be able to finally take control (even if we need a little help). Hey, I've been struggling with my weight since the age of 4! I've struggle with severe asthma & two eating disorders. I'm 24 years old & in the PRIME of my life and damn it, I want to enjoy it!!!! Kerri. Good for you! You've made an important, life-changing decision. I'm still very new (4/22) but I know it was the right thing to do. I am so happy for you that you are working on enjoying your life at such a young age. I am 57 and I say, "damn it, I am going to enjoy these years before retirement and I want to be a foxy lady in my retirement". I was sort of "hot" at your age and thought I'd be slim and pretty forever. I've done a lot of schooling and I seemed to put on more and more weight with each degree by becoming less and less active. Then I just kept partying, eating, eating, working, eating - you get the picture. I envy you for all the wonderful years you have ahead of you. Congratulations - and be sure to keep us informed after your surgery - how you're doing, what help you need, etc. Best of luck. Phyllis

Thanks Phyllis! I'm actually searching for flights right now, it's 7+ hours to San Diego from Boston, so it's been kinda tough to find a flight that's in the time criteria that's not over $600, per person! But hell, I'll get there if I have to walk!!

You said you are fairly new to this, how was/is the pain level? I have to return to work a few days after...and I want to have an idea of what to expect. I keep hearing about the gas, shoulder & swollen pains...it's kinda scary.

Thanks again for your kind words, they mean alot. This is SUCH a nerve-wracking decision for me (even though I think it's the "right" thing to do).

Take care,

Kerri :0)

Kerry, I was banded on June 21, Saturday. My trip home Monday was almost 12 hours from Mexicali to Dallas. If I had to do it again, knowing the difficult flights and lay over's, I would of stayed in San Diego an additional day or two. I think if i had done that, I would of had a better and quicker recovery. My shoulder pain for the first 4-5 days would of prevented me from returning to productive work too. Thankfully I have the luxury of working from home.

This surgery is a big step, i think we undervalue the notion that this is major surgery and you feel like it afterwards. If possible, I suggest you give yourself ample time to recuperate once the banding is done.

All things considered, i.e. ...a bit of pain, discomfort, etc, I doubt you will regret your decision. I just encourage you to give yourself ample time to let the swelling go down, the shoulder pains to subside and you to get back to speed before rushing back to work.

Hi Kerri,

Welcome to the group, sorry if this is a tad late but I got a new

job and been keeping busy. I had my band placed on Jan 27th, 2006

and I have lost 100lbs thus far with it. I can say that his work

speaks for itself among all of us here on the board. My surgery was

a breeze, didn't feel sick afterwards nor did I have any gas pains,

however that is not always the case as each individual is different

from the rest. Everything done there is done professional and as if

you were back in the states, only difference is the language. You

will find that they are professional, courteous, genuine,

respectful, accomodating and caring towards your physical well-

being. The hospital is beautiful as well as the people that work

there, everyone is very helpful and they want you to have the best

care possible. Surgery is about 45mins though could be longer or

shorter depending on what Dr. Aceves finds during the process. Your

stay is about 3days I believe. Once you get there they will process

you in and then you will get the spiel about the lapband by Dr.

Aceves and (head nurse), it's really pretty simple and

depending on what time your surgery is will depend on how early you

will get up in the morning! :) I've had a great time losing weight,

no complications and I look forward to returning back for another

fill sometime in September...unless this fill is still working well

then it might be later in the year. I have the VG band and I have

4cc's in it. I started out at 370, now at 270 and hope to be 250 by

end of summer and 200 by Xmas time :) If you need further

information go to Obesityhelp.com, register (its free) and you can

do further research there.

Good Luck!

Kelli

Kerri, I know what you mean about nerve-wracking. I was a mess until I finished my research and made a decision. Then I was so happy and couldn't wait. The pain is not much at all. It hurts a bit to try to get up from a lying down position, mostly in the middle of the tummy where the scope goes in during the surgery. It's 5 or 6 inches about the navel and it's the largest of the 4 or 5. I had a larger incision and pain probably a little longer than the norm because of the big, fat gallbladder that was pulled out of there! I did notice, though, that each day the discomfort (hard to call it pain) was less and less. The hardest for me was sitting for a long time at a desk, with slacks on (waistband across my middle) and I did too much of that when I was at home. I don't sit that long at a time at work. And sitting, just reading or enjoying a movie, no discomfort. It think the

average person can go to work in a few days. I could have, but didn't want to. Just be sure you have plenty of juice and broth, jello with you so if you get hungry you can have something. The worst part of the first 2 weeks is the hunger. And broth and jello get old pretty fast! When you get to thick/full liquids, it's much better. Also, I did not use any of the clear protein drinks for fear they would be horrible tasting, so maybe I was hungrier than necessary. Once I got on protein shakes, I was fine. About your flight and the timing, even though I'm a 1 hr 15 flight away, I flew in the night before, stayed in San Diego and rode to Mexicali in the a.m. as planned. If you can get a cheaper flight by flying in later and the flight and room add up to no more than the flight you're looking at, you might be better off. You won't be getting up at 2 a.m. Boston time, you'll have a chance to

rest the night before you go on down to the hospital. I was much more relaxed than if I got up at 4:00 a.m., traveled to SFO and then on down to SD, then to Mexicali in the same day. Something to consider! Take care. PhyllisKerri Stone <kstone723@...> wrote: Thanks Phyllis! Phyllis, I can't tell ya how much helpful information this is! I really had NO idea what to expect. I'm having the surgery on Thursday, and returning to work on Monday...have to, new job. But, I did book the flight for me & my honey yesterday. Due to both our conflicting work schedules, we kinda have to fly in the day of. And yes, we will be getting up about 2-2:30 Boston time (YUK!). (my BF) said..."honey it's ok, you'll sleep on the plane". I'm thinkin' is he NUTS??? My heart 'll be pounding out of my chest! (But I didn't say that, I just smiled at him). He's been SO incredibly supportive! He really is an amazing man! Ok, ok I'm gushing...I talk alot when I get nervous! The jello & the broth that I keep hearing about...How long do you have to be on clear liquids? How long will it be before I can eat "regular" foods? Hope to talk to you soon...All my best! I did notice, though, that each day the discomfort (hard to call it pain) was less and less. The hardest for me was sitting for a long time at a desk, with slacks on (waistband across my middle) and I did too much of that when I was at

home. I don't sit that long at a time at work. And sitting, just reading or enjoying a movie, no discomfort. It think the average person can go to work in a few days. About your flight and the timing, even though I'm a 1 hr 15 flight away, I flew in the night before, stayed in San Diego and rode to Mexicali in the a.m. as planned. If you can get a cheaper flight by flying in later and the flight

and room add up to no more than the flight you're looking at, you might be better off. You won't be getting up at 2 a.m. Boston time, you'll have a chance to rest the night before you go on down to the hospital. I was much more relaxed than if I got up at 4:00 a.m., traveled to SFO and then on down to SD, then to Mexicali in the same day. Something to consider! Take care. PhyllisKerri Stone <kstone723@...> wrote: Thanks Phyllis! I'm actually searching for flights right now, it's 7+ hours to San Diego from Boston, so it's been kinda tough to find a flight that's in the time criteria that's not over $600, per person! But hell, I'll get there if I have to walk!! You said you are fairly new to this, how

was/is the pain level? I have to return to work a few days after...and I want to have an idea of what to expect. I keep hearing about the gas, shoulder & swollen pains...it's kinda scary. Kerri, the instructions are to have clear liquids for 2 weeks, full liquids for 2 weeks, then mushies (soft foods - mashed banana, pureed meat) but I don't recall for how long, then we can eat more "solid" food, taking it easy to see what we can tolerate. Other doctors' post op instructions differ according to the respective doctor's preference, some as little as 5 days clear, 5 days thick. I fudged and did about 10 days of each, then went with soft foods. I wanted to be toward the "end" of thick liquids and to have tried mushies before going back to work. I wanted to have a good idea of what foods to take to work and keep in the fridge. Right now, I keep sugar free pudding and yogurt and protein shakes at work. If I'm in a hurry or there's nothing "safe" on the cafeteria menu, I can grab a shake. And for the mid-morning or mid-afternoon hunger, I can have a pudding cup or yogurt. It works out well. Good luck with your early a.m. flight. I was amazed at how relaxed I was. If it had been a long flight, I'm sure I would have fallen asleep. I found myself being VERY nervous the morning of surgery. I got up and got ready and just sat by the window of our hotel room staring out. That's when the reality had hit - I was going to have surgery! There was nothing at all to worry about - everything went well. Besides Dr. Aceves there's an internist and an anesthesiologist who come to visit preop. I felt very safe with them all! Good luck, Kerri. Phyllis

Kerri, I can feel your excitement! I remember how I felt. I wanted to talk about it all the time. I'm sure I was bore, but so what!! I'll be thinking about you on the big day. All the best. Write if you have more questions before you go, about anything. Otherwise, please, please, write as soon as you get back and tell us how it went for you. You'll be so pleasantly surprised. I was so well rested when I got home. I think it was that Ativan they gave me the night of surgery - boy did I sleep well!! Good luck to you! Phyllis

Hey Phyllis...I know, I can't seem to have any other intelligent conversation! All I can talk about is this surgery (with those whom I've told). It's just SUCH a big change in my life. My boyfriend & I were just saying how much everything is going to change. Even our Anniversary will be different...we usually go to this restaurant in Rhode Island that's nothing but lobster (all you can eat!). You can;t beat seafood from the East Coast! So we're going there one last time this weekend, kinda like my last hoorah. But even still, this surgery is going to be a blessing for me, I'm tickled pink that I can finally put an end to the "fat" struggle! If I can think of anything else, you'll be the 1st person I ask..If not, I'll be sure to write when I get home from Mexico. Thank you again, everyone's stories and input have made

this decision ALOT easier for me! Take Care...keep loosing! Kerri :0)"Phyllis D." <tobygirl5@...> wrote: Kerri, I can feel your excitement! I remember how I felt. Kerri, you are so motivated, you'll do great! My mouth is watering for that East Coast lobster! The best I ever had was on Cape Cod and again in Boston before heading home. As much as I love our west coast seafood, I haven't had lobster as good as back there!

Yes, some things will change. I'm finding that out at least weekly. My best friend eats like a bird and I always feel like such a pig because I seem to always be hungry when we're running around together. We got together to shop for nursery plants and deck furniture last weekend and she couldn't believe I was turning down food. We went for coffee first, she had a muffin and I said, "no thanks". When we finally stopped for lunch in the afternoon, she was shocked that I ordered Mc's Asian salad even though I got her a chicken club sandwich.

I just got an invitation to a dinner to celebrate the June birthdays in our crowd - an all-you-can-eat Asian buffet. I started to decline, then thought, why not drink tea with everyone and just have my protein shake on the way to dinner from work. Then I'm not tempted to stuff myself at the buffet. I'm cheap, too, and I don't want to pay for a buffet and eat a 1/2 cup of food! lol

You take care, Kerri. You will do very, very well. You'll be amazed at how good you feel after surgery. I had my gallbladder out at the same time as the banding and was running all over the hospital taking pictures for my hospital co-workers. Best of luck to you. Enjoy the wonderful people you will meet there - the Aceves staff and Dr. Aceves, the hospital staff, other bandsters, hopefully. Can't wait to hear from you! Phyllis

To anyone who has been through this, I would LOVE to hear about your experience to help me better make my decision, because honestly, I am a little (actually alot)leary about going all the way to Mexico to have the surgery done!!!Can't wait to hear from you, hanks so much!Kerri :)

My mouth is watering for that East Coast lobster! The best I ever had was on Cape Cod and again in Boston before heading home. As much as I love our west coast seafood, I haven't had lobster as good as back

there! I started to decline, then thought, why not drink tea with everyone and just have my

protein shake on the way to dinner from work. Then I'm not tempted to stuff myself at the buffet. I'm cheap, too, and I don't want to pay for a buffet and eat a 1/2 cup of food! lol You take care, Kerri. Phyllis Re: I don't know where to begin... It's an

absolutely wonderful thing to be able to finally take control (even if we need a little help). Hey, I've been struggling with my weight since the age of 4! I've struggle with severe asthma & two eating disorders. I'm 24 years old & in the PRIME of my life and damn it, I want to enjoy it!!!! So again, thank you all for your replies, they've really helped me make a life changing decision for the better!!! Take care of yourselves, & wish me luck!!! All my best, Kerri

I have lost over 40lbs and more than 48 inches

in 4 months+. The hospital was quiet and restful, (not like any hospital here with call bells ringing all night) It's a really nice hospital, remodeled rooms,

and hallways. It was almost like a US hospital but way cleaner, quieter, and caring.
