Folks - This topic seems to go round and round with no apparent progress or conclusions.

No one knows for sure just what effect all of these chemicals will have on us over time. However, to put these toxins and in many cases, known carcinogens on our skin and in our mouths two or three times a day cant be a good thing. Our skin absorbs around 60% of everything we put on it and it goes straight into our blood, which is why nicotine patches work!

Also, don't be taken in by manufacturer claims that a particular product is 'derived from'! Sodium Laurel Sulphate, used in may personal care products is described as: (Used in car washes, garage floor cleaners and engine degreasers - and in 90% of products that foam. Animals exposed to SLS and ALS experience eye damage, central nervous system depression, laboured breathing, diarrhoea, severe skin irritation, and even death.Young eyes may not develop properly if exposed to SLS and ALS because proteins are dissolved. SLS and ALS may also damage the skin's immune system by causing layers to separate and inflame), and is frequently disguised in semi-natural cosmetics with the explanation "comes from coconut". Its true, it does, but as you have just read, that clearly doesn't make it good. By the same rule of thumb, we would probably all give our children mashed potatoes, a product derived from the potato, but so is Vodka!, so be careful and dig deeper.

Just as smoking one cigarette probably wont harm you, using these chemicals probably wont either. Its the cumulative effect that's the worry and we know for sure that using cigarettes on a regular basis over a long period of time isn't good for you, FACT. Another piece I recently read suggested that only 200 years ago, 1 in 8000 of us suffered from cancer, whereas, in some parts of the western world, we are close to 1 in 2! Now, I'm not suggesting its all down to toothpaste and shampoo, but something isn't right.

I'm in the UK, but understand from news reports that a bill is being passed/considered in California, which will force healthcare and cosmetics manufacturers to carry health warnings as cigarettes do. Any 'local' info on this would be much appreciated.

With all things considered, ask yourself 'should I continue to take what may be a significant risk, when I have an alternative'?

If the answer is NO then find products that are 100% safe. My family buy all our healthcare from a 100% safe source and have done now for just over a year and as a result we feel better in ourselves. I don't wish to be seen to be pushing one particular product over another, so if you are interested in who we use, please drop me a mail independently to p.benn@...

Incidentally PEG, as shown in the cleanser below is described as: Potentially carcinogenic petroleum ingredient that can alter and reduce the skin's natural moisture factor. This could increase the appearance of aging and leave you more vulnerable to bacteria. Used in cleansers to dissolve oil and grease. It adjusts the melting point and thickens products. Also used in caustic spray-on oven cleaners. No wonder its an effective cleanser!! And a bit more info on SLS below !!

From Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS): EYE CONTACT:

INSTILLATION OF A 29% SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE SOLUTION INTO THE EYES OF SIX ALBINO RABBITS PRODUCED SEVERE IRRITATION. THE MATERIAL WAS CLASSIFIED AS A SEVERE SKIN IRRITANT.

Sorry if this sounds scary, but it is.

Regards to all -

The cleaser Abonne has for "normal to mature skin" contains, in order of percentage:

water, safflower oil, aloe (all good), glyceryl stearate, PEG 100 (this is PolyEthylene Glycol), ethylhexyl palmitate, cetearyl alcohol, Ceteareth 20, cetyl alcohol, carrageenan, symphytum officinale extract, panax ginseng root extract, rosa damascena flower oil, lecithin, tocopheryl acetate, carbomer, stearic acid, dimethicone, disodium EDTA, methylparaben, propylparaben, quaternium-15, triethanloamine.

One of their toners: water, hamamelis extract, dimethicone copolyol, glycerine, butylene glycol, aloe, panthenol, rosa canina fruit extract, equisitum arvense extract, sambucus canadensis extract, carrageenan, methylparaben, diazolidinyl urea.

Some nice extracts, but their “active botanicals” begin down the list, not near the top which means there’s really not much of the good stuff in them. They have some ingredients I personally would prefer not to use, such as butylene glycol, PEG 100.

Their body lotion ingredients - water, carbomer, butylene glycol, methylparaben, --- This is the FIRST four ingredients, which means the majority of the formula consists of these. Methylparaben, in this concentration, is quite possibly going to cause irritation to the skin.

And Arbonne has no antioxidant protection at all. I use products with beta glucan, coq10, grape skin, etc.

I am just curious if anyone knows of Arbonne's products and if they are any good?
