KJ-----My wife had MGB and Mail Handlers Insurance; They refused to pay on

grounds of Investigational/experimental. We appealed it all the way to

(OPM) Office of Personnel Management, and lost our appeal, they still

refused to pay.---Hope this helps-----HJH

Hi Harold,

Did you have your surgery approved by the Insurance company before you had

it or did you wait until after you had it done to go after the Insurance

company?

My friend said that as long as he goes through the steps and has it approved

before hand they will pay for it.

You are the second person that has said they won't pay because it is

considered

experimental...so I don't think it's looking to good for him even though his

policy does say they pay for gastric bypass surgery.

KJ---We tried for approval before the surgery, but they would not

pre-approve so we went the appeal route after the surgery. It is only the

Mini-Gastric bypass that they will not approve if I understood the final

appeal. We went through 3 reviews and 2 appeals. They have a differeent

contractor administrating Mail Handlers for the last two years which is

" First Health " , that may be part of the problem. The other problem is that

my wife died about three weeks after the surgery.--------HJH

I had MGB surgery in 2000, and the pre-approval was okayed by Mail Handlers.

They paid for my surgery. Good Luck.
