Guest guest Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 The fashion industry has given us a break in the sizes. Our overall size in America has grown so to appease us size conscious women they increased the inches for the sizes. One thing I have noticed as well, is clothes from Target, Wal-Mart and other places with lower prices on their clothing, usually use less fabric. There is less give in the fabrics and they stick to a stricter sizing. Anyone else notice these things? Suzanne H High Point-Dr. R 7/17/03 270/160 Quote
Guest guest Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 I'm curious why I now wear an 8 or 10 at 150 when at the same wt years ago I would wear a 12 or 14. Also, while I consistently wear 10s now, my size 10 jeans from the 80s are way too small in the waist. What's up with that? Looks like a 10 ain't what it used to be. I still have 20 pounds to go to goal and I'm trying not to swim in the River Denial. nptexas nancy in texas 8/10/04 237/150 age 58 and holding Quote
Guest guest Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 There's been a lot of press about " vanity sizing " . Apparently, stores are cutting clothes bigger than they used to. They showed a couple manniquins...one from the 70s and one from now, and there was a 2 " difference in waist size, even though they were both size 10 dress manniquins. It's kind of fun to wear small sizes now, but I have to remind myself that part of the reason that I can fit into a 6 or 8 is because of these larger sizes. And I have a very thin sister that has trouble finding clothes that fit -- everything is too big! (doubt I'll have that problem anytime soon...) I'm told that couture sizing and European sizing is still like it used to be. So I guess I'd be a 10/12 in that stuff! Joanie 5/25/04 Drs. Guest guest Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 I haven't started doing much shopping yet, determined to downsize through my closet of what I wore on my way up. This is excellent info to carry with me when I reach size 12, my shopping target size. It will help me practically, of course, but more importantly, it will help me keep my head on straight. I can't afford to get complacent or be lulled into less dedication by a false sense of accomplishment if I luck into a smaller vanity-sized garment! THX! Guest guest Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 Suzanne, I have noticed this same thing. I went into Target the beginning of the week, grabbed a pair of size 10 pants, and then a 12 and then a 14!!!! I didn't buy any pants there! I went over to Kohl's and got 10's. I'll take the vanity sizing any day. It just makes me mentally feel better in a 10 than a 14. I'm sure no one else can tell or cares, but I still have to have the 10's. Guest guest Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 As I understand it (and from my own experience), there are certain mid-priced companies that are notorious for vanity sizing. Examples would be Banana Republic, Express, Gap, and Ann . I buy a lot of stuff from Target and have not found them to run true-to-size (ie, I can wear fairly small sizes there). However, I find that cheapo stores like H & M, Forever 21, and other " junior " type sizing run smaller. I also find that it depends on the cut of the clothes. I usually need a small size at NY & Company, but if I try on something that is very low-cut, I need a bigger size. Bottom line: I still have to try everything on. Can't assume my size. Having said that, I ordered a Diane von Furtenburg wrap dress from Nordstrom.com, and I guessed on the size. Which means it probably won't fit. It still hasn't come. And once I get used to wearing a certain size, I get downright sad if I try on something in that size and it fits tight. Very silly, I know! OK, I'm procrastinating. Time to go for a little jog. Doggie has been waiting patiently for me! Joanie (who is size 6,8, or even 10...depending...) 5/25/04 Drs. Guest guest Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 I had the same clothing experience over the holidays! I went to Sears Essentials store by my dad's house in FL since he got me a gift card for Christmas. I tried on pair after pairs of jeans and to my surprise - ended up in size 16s!!! In everything I tried on, 16! Whoo hoo! I tried on a 16 in a skirt there and got it but actually could use it in a 14, but the didn't have one. I went to KMart with a gift card from my sister and got a pair of Levis and got them in 18 talls. There is room to breathe in them and 16's would fit me - but snuggly and I have an issue with my outer thighs that keep me from getting jeans that fit snug on me. So, I'm wearing mostly 16's in everything but jeans, 14s in skirts and 12's in shirts, but find that jeans are way off in sizing! It's great to be in smaller sizes tho and I can't wait to have plastic surgery to get rid of all this skin around my " belt " /spare tire and see where I end up in clothing sizes. I showed Ben a picture of me - my senior picture, while at my dad's house and he said he couldn't beleive how much thinner I look now - I had such a round face and thick neck! I'm loving my MGB and the success I've had so far! 20 more pounds to go...I've got to get off the sweets to do it though - my sweet tooth is running full force these days! I need to just pitch it all!! Wish me luck! tee hee hee Hugs and happy shopping everyone! Guest guest Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 When I was much younger and weighed 150 to 160, I wore size 14. Now I weight between 176 and 178 and still waer size 14. In mid-rise jeans, I can even wear 12. I know that's not my real size, so I know that clothesmakers are sizing things differently. I don't care! All I know is when I look at my profile in a store window, I like what I see. But ordering anythign by mail is almost impossible. Marilyn in VT Quote
Guest guest Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 I have wondered the same thing- except that I kept my favorite pair of jeans from years ago(weight 125)- they are a size 10- and I can fit into them- but they are tight- now I wear a 6-8 and I weigh 143. I have wondered how I can look so small and yet weigh so much? Someone told me it was heavy bones after being heavy- but my mother in law had the surgery and she was heavier than me- she went from a 250 to 120 - I think I would look like skin and bones at 120- ( and she does) yet I used to look good at that weight. Since losing the weight- I have thinner thighs than I ever had- it's weird- I lost in places that were real trouble spots for me before. 7-1-03 5' 5.5 " 222/143/135 >From: " " <nptexas@...> >Reply- > >Subject: clothing sizes >Date: Thu, 05 Jan 2006 10:02:20 -0000 > >I'm curious why I now wear an 8 or 10 at 150 when at the same wt years >ago I would wear a 12 or 14. Guest guest Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 I had a wonderful experience the other day. I was in Wal-Mart with my parents, whom I hadn't seen for over a year and was visiting them and my sister in Boston for the holidays... I was trying on clothes and was picking out all the 16's, 14's and 12's when I decided on a whim to try a size 8 (for a laugh) and low and behold the pants fit!!! I almost cried! I came out of the cubicle and showed my parents, they said that the pants looked great. I then asked them what size they thought I had on...My mum said 12 (bless her heart) and my dad said 18! I had to laugh as whenever we went shopping together back in England, I always had to shop in the big girl stores which probably made him guess that size. I had my surgery July 12th weighing in at 275.5lbs size 24. As of today, I have lost 90lbs, weighing a mere 185.5lbs...what a difference 5 and a half months have made! My parents didn't recognize me at the airport! I am thrilled beyond words at how my body has changed and so has my self-esteem...it's almost through the roof now. I am happier than ever and smiling at everybody. Thank god for Dr. Rutledge! A very happy new year to all of my MGB family! Anthea 7/12/05 275.5/185.5 size 24 then, now anywhere from an 8-14!:) " It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end. " Quote
Guest guest Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 Anthea - CONGRATS!!! I had a similar experience trying on clothes (by myself tho). It's weird - I weigh 195 and am in 16s in jeans and 14 in skirts - you're just 10 pounds less than me! Funny how we weigh so close to the same weight and our sizes are SO much different! My sister didn't recognize me in the airport either! She walked right past me and when I called her name - she looked right at me and kept going. I had to drop my bags and put my arms out and " show her " I was the one calling her name! She cried and made a huge scene right there in Tampa International! (helps that she was a bit tipsy ;0) too!) But it was so amazing to have her there waiting for me and her to be so happy for me - we're fraternal twins and never looked alike and never will - Now I'm the smaller of the two. Unfortunately - she's been gaining weight and is bigger than I've ever known her to be and she's really taking it hard, especially now that I'm not " HUGE " like I've always been! She wouldn't even let me take a picture of us together. Which is upsetting to me - because as big as I was - I was always in pictures with her - standing next to me at 245 pounds heavier than her at the time! Oh well! I'm just thankful my weight has come off - I'm healthy and loving life - She will be okay and lose the weight too! I'll do what I can to help! (I posted new pictures on the photo board Dr. R set up!) Are you on there yet?? If not - it's really easy to set up - give it a shot - I'd LOVE to see pictures of you! Anyway - sorry to make this so long! Thought I'd share that with you! Guest guest Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 When you're in plus size clothes, you lose or gain a size for every 20 lbs. In regular clothing sizes, you go up or down a size for every 10 lbs of loss. In regular clothing sizes, they start with a base size of 8 and work up or down from there. In plus sizes, they work up or down from a 14. I learned this when I sold clothing. It's hard to imagine losing 10 lbs and going from a size 12 to size 10! No wonder we can vary in sizes! Love, Suzanne Quote
Guest guest Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 I have an interesting anecdote along these lines as well. At 150 lbs (thinking I was finished losing) I bought a whole new wardrobe including several pairs of jeans in size 12 petite. Well, surprise, surprise, I've lost another 25 lbs since then, so all the 12's are now a bit big, but still wearable, even without a belt (although most of the time I wear my shirts tucked in with a belt). So I'd say I'm a 10 petite now. A couple months ago, my girlfriend (a life-long size 4-6, who looks like a Barbie doll and you really want to hate 'cept she's so darn nice!) was having a garage sale. Her daughter (who looks like Kim Basinger at age 30...but that's another story!) had dropped off several bags of clothing for the sale. One of my tasks was to sort through, price and arrange all the clothes. Well, of course, we were grabbing anything out we thought we could use, and I came across a pair of size 6 jeans, which I gave to my girlfriend to try on. She came out with them on and said " These are pretty big on me; are you sure they're not a 9 instead of a 6. " So we checked the label and sure enough, they were a 6. She insisted I try them on, and they fit perfectly! The brand is " Style & Company. " I wasn't familiar with the brand, and they must be expensive for me to be able to wear a 6. But needless to say, they are my MOST FAVORITE pair of jeans right now! in Atlanta 06/03/04 290/125 ps: I always assumed that was how Oprah was able to wear size 8...my theory being that the large number on the price tag is in exchange for the small number on the size tag. Guest guest Posted June 23, 2006 Report Posted June 23, 2006 > The old timers here are probably sick of seeing me write this, but I gain > and lose my weight in places where it doesn't really count towards clothing > size. I wore the same 26/28 when I was 220 as I did when I was 296. That *has* to be frustrating! I can't imagine how futile it would feel to lose 76 pounds and not see a change! Or, did you see a change, just not in most clothing sizes? I'm now losing in odd places. Well, not really, just places that I hadn't lost a whole lot in before. My chest is practically non-existant comparatively (50J to 42DD) and now I'm noticing that the rolls on my back are finally slimming down some (still there, not as large). In a way, it would be nice for ALL the weight to come off my abdomen and hips first, but I suppose I'd look goofy if that were to happen. :-) -Bonnie Quote
