Hey there, Ginny. Since I live in PA, and never attend your monthly

meetings, who really cares what I think. But, that said, I still favor a

forum that is strictly MGB'ers. RNY people have many similar issues, as does

anyone who has been or currently is morbidly obese, but they also have their

own unique problems and a very different set of post-op and eating rules.

Each RNY doc seems different in what they preach; and their patients are so

often confused. I can see the meetings becoming a set of " My doctor said. .

.. " and " I was told. . . " and veering far from the course set down for us.

That's what I think would happen. . . PhillyJude, putting her much smaller

Hmmmm...... I dunno... I can see pros and cons of both.

Let's see how everyone else feels.

radical idea

Greetings, all!

I am thinking of opening the MGB monthly meeting to anyone who has had

WLS.

The scars we bears are large and chiefly internal. No matter what

procedure we go through, we all have to worry about nutrition,

fitness, complications, and the psychological changes we are going

through.

We are all sisters and brothers when it comes to obesity and dealing

with the physical/social/emotional problems.

What do you all think... it is up to you.

I obviously don't attend the meetings but I could see one down side - would

Dr. R still want to come to the meetings if it was open to any weight loss

surgery. Maybe a separate meeting could be established in addition to the

regular MGB support meeting.

I am not actually in the area to be able to attend the support group

there so your decision would not affect me personally. I'm sure

there will be those for and those against the idea. Maybe if people

could actually see for themselves that we are not dying from having

the MGB and that most of us are actually recovering quite nicely

maybe it would help put some fears and rumors to rest. It is really

hard to say what will happen until it is tried. It may work, who

knows? Interesting concept.......

And I agree with you very much on all the things that we have to deal

with that are similar. The only real difference is the type of

surgery we all chose.

This is a very good point also. Something to consider.

I live in Florida so I will not vote on that.

However, I will play devil's advocate and ask a few hard

questions:

What would be the value to MGBers?

Are there not enough MGBers attending?

Is this to increase the amount in attendance?

Would a large amount of meeting time then be spent explaining

the various WLS and specifically the MGB?

If so, would that get redundant to the regulars? What effect

would that have on membership?

With the lack of new MGB post ops and the never ending supply

of RNY post ops, would the membership slowly drift away from

MGB support?

Would this cause MGBers to stop coming?

With negative PR all over the internet and previously in the area

media, could the meetings eventually turn into yet another place

where MGBers have to justify their choices?

Is there a need for MGBers to have a meeting all their own, a

place where they can be PROUD of their choice and their

success. A meeting where they are confident they never will

have to defend that choice?

Those are a few of the cons. Other than offering support to other

WLS patients.....what are the pros?

Ginny: I read an extremely unflattering blow by blow of the last meeting in

Durham on another list. This person was pre-op and she was told by someone who

had RNY that she should attend and that it was for all wls people. Whew! She

sure had awful things to say about Dr. R and about the meeting itself. And there

was a very unflattering section about you in particular.

I don't live there and have only made three meetings...but if it was opened up

to all WLS, I definately would NOT come to Durham for a meeting. I go to a

support group in Florida for all WLS and one here occassionally and all I get

about MGB is a bunch of crap that frankly I'm tired of listening to.

Just my cranky input.
