Three Related Learning Opportunities with Consultants/Trainers

and Faye Wetherow from

CommunityWorks, Parksville, British Columbia

November 13, 14, and 15, 2006

About and Faye: and Faye have long been involved in innovative service development, training and facilitation in the field of community living. As independent facilitators and teachers, they conduct planning, training and design sessions for individuals and families, government and community agencies, schools, parent associations and self-advocacy groups throughout the United States and Canada.

They created the very first Microboards and developed Prairie Housing ative (inclusive cooperative housing), PRT Manufacturing (a worker-owned manufacturing company), L'Avenir ative (a family- and consumer-governed service co-op), the Open Access Resource Centre, and some of Canada’s earliest supported employment, individualized funding, and personal support projects.

For many years they shared their lives with an adopted daughter who lived with complex mobility and communication challenges. Of their daughter they say: “Amber's courage, profound love and gentle spirit will remain with us always. She called us to live gently and mindfully, to act with honor in times of peril, and always celebrate life.â€

Opportunity #1:

Person-Centered Planning: Extending our Reach and Deepening our Skill.

When? Monday, November 13, 2006, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Where? County Educational Services Center, 1910 Fairgrove Avenue, Hamilton, OH Recommended Participants: People who have been facilitators of person-centered planning. (Others who are interested in or committed to person-centered planning are also welcome to take part.)

Organizations that support people with disabilities in southwest Ohio have, for the past several years, used a variety of ways to help individuals and families plan the patterns of supports that will be most useful to those individuals and families. These planning methods are usually described under the heading: “Person-centered planning.â€

and Faye Wetherow have practiced and taught person-centered planning for many years. They have helped many people to learn the skill/art of facilitation of planning-meetings, and they were the early teachers about PATH (Planning Alternative Tomorrows with Hope,†Inclusion Press) facilitation in Ohio. and Faye will help experienced facilitators learn some new and helpful techniques and will guide the group in an effort to enhance ways we in this part of the world can sustain the practice of person-centered planning into the future.

Opportunity #2:

Working Together: An Introduction to “Microboards†and other ative Ways to Arrange Support for Vulnerable People

When? Tuesday, November 14, 2006, 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Where? Wilks Conference Center, Miami U.-Hamilton, Hamilton, OH Recommended Participants: Anyone interested in the design and actualization of PERSONAL supports for people with disabilities.

Microboards and atives: Moving Forward with the Family Model

As we think about creating good lives with our friends and family members, we look for ways of bringing trusted friends into the family circle so that care, creativity, and responsibility will be there for a lifetime. We want our friends and family members to be at the heart of community life and not just on “the street.†We want their gifts to be recognized and welcomed by the larger community. We want to find ways of balancing the ideas of “self determination†(autonomy) and supported decision-making (interdependence).

Finally, we want to bring the control of financial and human resources as close as possible to the person and her/his family and friends so that problems can be solved quickly, resources used flexibly and efficiently, and we are trusted to be responsible and accountable. Microboards and cooperatives offer powerful ways of bringing these values into being in a practical manner. There are 300 microboards operating successfully in North America and Europe.

The design concept is simple:

A Microboard is formed when a small (micro) group of committed family and friends join together with a person who lives with challenges to create a non-profit society (board). Together this small group of people addresses the person's planning and support needs in an empowering and customized fashion. A Microboard comes out of the person centered planning philosophy and is therefore created for the sole support of one individual. - adapted from Vela Microboard Association's website

Opportunity #3:

At the End of our Rope: Finding Ways through Conflict that Threatens Support for Vulnerable People.

When? Wednesday, November 15, 2006, 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Where? Wilks Conference Center, Miami U.-Hamilton, Hamilton, OH Recommended Participants: Anyone interested in ways to move forward with team-work with people with disabilities in the face of disagreement or even conflict.

Much of the time circles or teams trying to support someone with a disability keep their goals in mind and work steadily in the direction of those goals. Sometimes, though, disagreements arise, and those can turn into major distractions from purpose or even open conflict if they’re not tended to. and Faye Wetherow have helped support teams or circles through such rocky passages. They will share some approaches that have proven helpful and will guide participants’ practice of some of those approaches. While they may not be able to supply all the courage that dealing with conflict requires, and Faye will offer ideas that can enhance participants’ confidence to respond to conflict within teams/circles of which participants are members.
