This site has some excellent pecs cards you can print off. Go halfway down the

page to find them.

Beyond Autism Pecs Pictures/Icons Pages

Also check out the Communication, Assistive Technology and Augmentive

Communication page as there are tons of great sites there also.

I have tried to make a variety of pictures for kids at different levels. The

" photo " ones of food are getting to be more of common name brands and I have

tried to give you choices in brands when I can for the ones the kids may be

familiar with in your house.

" On-line " Grocery stores are a great source of pictures for name brand foods.

For those of you that don't have easy access to laminating your pictures I

remember what the school did last year when they needed a pecs in a hurry that

they did not have - glue your picture/pictures to index cards and use clear

contact paper to protect and strengthen them.

When you print the pictures I would advise making sure that you have your

printer set on " best quality " .

You can always copy/cut/paste these pictures and manipulate them in your own

word processing/drawing programs to try to make them fit your needs.

I bought a roll of self adhesive magnets and put a piece on the back of each pec

and put them on the side of my refrigerator. Works great! My son will stand

their and scan the pictures for what he wants and bring it to us. Of course the

frig is kind of messy looking but...

These symbols/pictures are also highly effective using them for a " schedule "

system or for a " choice board " when using a token system. In my " personal

opinion " I recommend the book " ( " Activity Schedules for Children with Autism:

Teaching Independent Behavior. " Activity schedules enable children with autism to

accomplish activities with greatly reduced adult supervision. An activity

schedule is a set of pictures or words that cues a child to engage in a sequence

of activities. When the activities are mastered, the children are more self

directed and purposeful in their home, school and leisure activities. In this

book, parents and professionals will find detailed instructions to help them

create schedules and to teach children to use them. 120 pages, Soft Cover, 1999,

by Lynn E. McClannahan, Ph.D. and J. Krantz, Ph.D. Available at

Workstation Photos

An Easy Way To Make Pictures

Most computers have a " photo " or " take picture " function (on the MAC it is

control-shift-three) and it will take a picture of whatever is on your screen.

You can then take the " picture " you took and manipulate / resize / add text or

whatever in your graphics program. You can do this with any favorite computer

programs that are running, take " pictures " of favorite cartoon characters on web

sites, toys or games at your favorite toy web site such as etoys.com or

toysrus.com or amazon.com etc....it is a GREAT way to get pictures for a

communication system. Then if you have Claris Works or Microsoft Word or

whatever you use for drawing and painting you can copy - paste them with several

pictures to a document and print it out! Voila!
