Guest guest
Hi Ellen, Please keep me posted about auditory integration therapy. When we did a bunch of testing for Kelsey, the only thing that stood out was her extremely low score on an auditory test. When there was background noise, she could not distinguish words and ranked in the 5th percentile! Dr. Hat says this is OCD-related and called " the cocktail party effect. " She seems to do OK at school, but sometimes I wonder if a noisy classroom gets in the way of her hearing instructions (like when we did an hour of extra math homework two nights ago only to find out it was the wrong pages!!) Next year in 4th grade the class size doubles at 20 to 1, too. I'd be very interested to know if this sort of thing can be remediated and if so how. Please let me know if you learn anything at your appointment! Thanks, in San Diego
Guest guest
Hi I decided to make an appointment with DR Hatton after all. Spoke to him personally. It's probably the same distance as going to UCLA. I feel such relief in going to someone recommended. Thanks Terry Re:To Ellen Hi Ellen,Please keep me posted about auditory integration therapy. Guest guest
Have you looked into Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD)? It involves not being able to properly process auditory information, even with perfect hearing. The " cocktail party effect " that the doctor mentioned is a very good description of this disorder. It can be a disorder in and of itself or comorbid with many different things. There is ton of info on the web. Vicki in Ky

Guest guest
, How are you doing girl? I hear you about that candy! I put it in a pillowcase and locked it in the truck of the car. Out of sight, out of mind... nope! It's too cold in there to try to get to in the middle of the night though! For some reason I just CAN " T throw it away. Maybe it's the Italian in me, never waste food! No stones yet, just a few grains of sand. I had stents put in about three weeks ago and then had lith last week. I am supposed to get the stents out on Monday. I can't wait because they are most uncomfortable. Hopefully, something will show up soon. They think they are related to low vit. D and not absorbing the calcium. Looks like a lot of my favorite foods are being cut now! I really feel for those who have had these as chronic issues. What has your mom done for them? Ellen, Brrrrrrrr...freezing in Chicago. (who, by the way, invested in long underwear for the first time and then went to get her new drivers lic. pic taken yesterday, with an adjustment to the " weight " . I lied of course and put myself 25 pounds lighter, but that is just because I know in a few years I should get there. The picture is one of the best I have ever taken. I want to show everyone; probably because it doesn't show my butt!)

Guest guest
I thought I would chime in on the hair issue here. Ellen, you mentioned a tingly scalp among other things and it reminded me of an eye doctor I went to once who noticed my lack of eyelashes. He said that we have natural bacteria in our hair follicles. Stress can cause the body to produce more adrenaline which in turn makes the follicles produce more bacteria. The bacteria can make the hair in the follicles stiff and irritated and cause it to fall out. My problem was that I have trichotillomania and pulled the eyelashes out but I thought it was interesting. I sometimes wonder if it is the irritation caused by the bacteria that make people like me pull their hair out. I don't know if the doctor was right but it's something to think about. Kelley in NV P.S. I do not have problem with any other hair--the hair on my head seems to stay put but my mom loses her hair when she is stressed (which is just about all the time!) Guest guest
Hi Ellen, Let's see... as I remember it, my hair fell out all over, but it was most noticeable in the front and top (kind of like a receding hairline). It didn't take very long to grow back in, but it felt thinner for a long time afterward. I lost a lot after having babies (some each time) and once when I was living abroad. And it didn't hurt or anything - just lots fell out when I brushed it. I remember how annoying it was that the doctors I asked about it just shrugged. I felt like saying, " if YOU were losing YOUR hair, I think you'd be taking it seriously! "
