Guest guest
Hello everyone, This past week we attended our area Boy Scout Summer for the 1st time. Our troop attends the Camp Firelands on the even number years and on the odd years we go someplace else. joined scouts in the spring of 2004. That year we just attended parents night and had dinner with the group. This gave a look at the area. This was followed by a couple weekend campouts with the troop in the fall. In 2005 we went to Hocking Hills for our summer camp and worked on the Indian Lore. He only lasted 4 days at summer camp last year. This was our 1st year to attend Camp Firelands summer camp. Nor only did he last the whole week but he did it without any major problem and very few little problems. We were blessed in the counsel provided a golf cart for to use as the hike to dinner and a couple of the merit badge work areas would have been physically impossible for him. completed the Indian Lore Badget he started last summer, completed the Art, Pottery, Archary, Fishing and Enviromental Science badge. He completed the swimming requirement for his 1st class promotion. Matter of fact he only has 3 more requirements to become Star but you have to be 1st Class for 4 month before becoming Star. He also earn his 1st year Cheif Wyindot (not spell right). He also earned his totem chip so he can carry his scout knife and he earned his firemans chip so not he can help start the troop campfire. He also was a server at Friday's dinner. One of the other boys in the troop helped him carry due to his cerbreal palsy. He only has 2 more hours of community service to complete his citzenship badge. We have another Autistic boy in our troop who is working on his Eagle project and was tapped out for the Order of the Arrow. His mother was going to leave after dinner Wednesday. But the scoutmaster asked her to please stay for the campfire as they have a surprize for her son. She, as well as the rest of us, were in tears when he was tapped out. This has been such a great week! Everything went so well. We was able to keep him busy and on task and he kept it together so very well. We are so very proud of him!!! Than the Sandusky Register came out and did a story on , Autism and Boy Scouts. They also are doing a part on the seminar we are putting on an dthe report said her editor told her this may be a front page story! I am so excited! Guest guest
Becky...This is BIG!!!! You go ahead and boast all you want! We're ALL proud of . Of course I don't know your son, but at the end, you mention Jame's challenges. Honestly, " Severe MR " sounds like a diognosis that 80% of autistic kids were given routinely, mostly because of how they present themselves (lack of eye contact, etc) and how they perform on conventional tests. Your son is 15 and would fit into the mold of the old way of thinking. So many of our ASD kids have average to above average intellegence... they're " in " there taking every little thing in. accomplished a LOT this past week. Sounds like a pretty smart cookie to me. Have you ever thought of having him re- tested by someone who knows autism? Just a thought... When the article comes out, let us know. Maybe there will be a link where we can all read it. I'm so excited to hear about media coverage when it comes to our kids. " Congratulations " to !!!! Please tell him we are all behind him 100%!!!! -Trish --- In , becky griggs <sleeplessohio@...> wrote: > > Hello everyone, > This past week we attended our area Boy Scout Summer for the 1st time. Guest guest
Yes he has been tested by his nero pysic 3 times in the past 6 years. He functions mainly at the year old level and has been stuck there for some time. sadly the DX of Severe MR is in comparence to others his age. The school testing has him at the moderate MR level but accept the severe DX. Something that many people do not know is at least with Boy Scouts is if the scout does his very best effort he can earn his way thorugh. EX. will be doing the biking maret badge, he needs it for Eagle. He will never be able to do a 50 mile ride in 8 hours. The counsel accepts this and is currently working on an alterane plan for to complete the badge, Becky Mother to , 15, Autism, Epilepsy, Cerebal Palsy, Severe MR Everybody has barriers and obstacles. If you look at them as containing fences that don't allow you to advance, then you're going to be a failure. If you look at them as hurdles that strengthen you each time you go over one, then you're going to be a success. Carson Surgeon How low will we go? Check out Messenger’s low PC-to-Phone call rates.
