Guest guest
Hi Everyone! I think I met some of you at the biomed meeting on July 15th..... We are just getting started with my son, (3.5 yrs. old) and we are working with Dr. Pouls out it CA. She has given us a list of 11 supplements/enzymes to start on and we are having a horrible time getting him to take any of them!!!!!!!!!!! We have tried to put oils in his juice and he will not drink it. We have tried to break up capsules and put the powder in yogurt, pudding, ice-cream, brownies, and applesauce and he has been spitting EVERYTHING out!!!!!!!! We are very frutstrated as we finally have a whole cupboard full of stuff that we think might REALLY help him and we can't get any of it (He's too little to swallow a whole capsule) into him!!!!!!!! ANY IDEAS, SUGGESTIONS, HELPFUL TRICKS YOU HAVE FOR GETTING KIDS TO TAKE ALL OF THESE SUPPLEMENTS 2 AND 3 TIMES A DAY WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!! Thank you! and Jay Rotsky LBarano710@... Guest guest
hi leslie, i so understand your frustration. we had the same problem with noah. two things that worked for us were... breaking up the capsule and mixing it with a mixture of margarine and salt and cinnamon sugar and putting it on toast or anything else like that he may eat. another way we put a mixture of the vitamins, vanilla (alcohol free) and sugar into a syringe and squirted it into the back of his cheek. he did not like this but we were desperate. thinking of you and your family and hoping things are going ok. take care, shari goldberg
Guest guest
Hi , What I did to get my son to take his vitamins and supps. 1. First of all make sure your son likes the food or drink you want to mix the vit or supp with. 2. I put only about 1/4 of the vitamin or supplement in his food/or drink to begin with. (I did this out of sight - where he did not know this was going to occur.) If he refuses to take the food or drink, don't push it. Try less than 1/4 next time.. whatever you can do to get him to take even a minute amount is good to start with. Later that day if he wants that drink again, add another 1/4 or less depending what he will take. Some children are very sensitive to taste, some are not so sensitive, I was fortunate that my son is not sensitive to changes in taste. May I ask what vitamins he is taking? Guest guest
Hi Shari, Those are some unique suggestions - us, parents, have to be so creative in how we can sneek things into the little guys....... BTW I hear the CAN meetng at your house was a good one! My husband Don was there and met a bunch of people. Sorry I couldn't make it. I was hoping to be able to network a bit as we are nursing this foundation idea here, in my backyard. Meaning, me and my husband would like to do to something to help families with biomed expenses, respite and therapies costs. If you have any ideas for us, we would love to hear them. We are working on establishing a foundation - we have a group also. I know you are involved in many things - obviously the CAN initiative, maybe Barrie Galvin still? I met you through one of their lectures before in person, btw....anyhow, pls let me know if you wanted to talk to us - help us in one way or another. Thanks so much!!! sharigoldberg22@... wrote: hi leslie, i so understand your frustration. we had the same problem with noah. two things that worked for us were... breaking up the capsule and mixing it with a mixture of margarine and salt and cinnamon sugar and putting it on toast or anything else like that he may eat. another way we put a mixture of the vitamins, vanilla (alcohol free) and sugar into a syringe and squirted it into the back of his cheek. he did not like this but we were desperate. thinking of you and your family and hoping things are going ok. take care, shari goldberg Talk is cheap. Guest guest
Hi , Our little one, then 3.0, took her supplements willingly, no matter how horrid they were, until the zinc kicked in and she could actually taste them. We then took a firm approach, you know "We have to do this, let's get it over with" But one day she just refused and no matter how firm I was she wasn't taking them. Not a great approach, I admit, but I told her she would have to sit in her room until she took them......and she retreated happily to her room, very content with herself, ah where is that psychologist training when you need it? So, the next day, I went and bought some Gummi Bear Vites, pretty cute, little bears, have a tiny bit of vitamins in them, and told her if she took her yucky bites of vitamins she could have a few Gummi Bears, it worked and we have never had any trouble since. I do keep the Gummi Bears in site, but don't let her hold them since she ate them ahead of her vitamins a few times. We use lots of praise, have since taught her to swallow capsules, big relief, but I don't know how they take the stuff. I accidentally got some of it in my mouth one time and thought I was going to lose my breakfast. Lots of empathy for you and your little one, hope you find a way. ----- Original Message ----- From: DMHelmick1@... Guest guest
hi andrea, i think your idea is a great one...there is a tremendous need for financial support as we all know too well. i would be happy to help and support your endeavor. i am still on the board of barrie galvin's non-profit GERCF (the galvin education and resource center for families). we have a wonderful library of over 500 books, videos, materials and still have our lecture series and floortime courses. there is a reasonable fee to join which allows access to the lending library, lectures for free and support. the first CAN(cure autism now) meeting was attended by over 60 parents, aunts, uncles, siblings, grandparents and friends of those touched by autism. it was an awesome turn out and a powerful way to launch our cleveland chapter!!! so glad don was able to come. our next meeting is in October. we will be flying the director of research in to talk to our chapter about what CAN is doing in the research world. in June we will be having our first WALK! i will keep you and everyone else posted. take care, keep in touch, shari
