Guest guest
Ann - I think you have illustrated one area where there is a gap in service or help for individuals with disabilities - that of true participation in church. This is a subject near and dear to me. Christ didn't come for the "perfect" or "typical" individuals, but for everyone, including their disabilities. And I think the church is the one place that should/needs to accept everyone. Well, I've been musing over in my mind what exactly is needed in the churches that individuals with disabilities and their families need to be accepted and feel accepted in the church. Any thoughts? Chris******************************************* and I were at Sunday Mass one day. We went to the 10:30 mass(big mistake) which is usually jam packed. We ended up standing behind the last pew ,with an older couple sitting down in the pew. kept asking me questions about how my dad and Jesus died. We were wispering and I was trying to quiet him even more. The older gentleman turned around and said to us Can't you at least be quiet during the Consecration? I thought we were being quiet, but I guess not enough. Anyhow, we left before receiving Communion and I called the Pastor the next day. We agreed that we should go to thelater mass. The only thing that I can think about that couple is that I feel sorry for their grandchildren. Ann
Guest guest
I have been very fortunate that our church has been extremely supportive. Most everyone in the congregation accepts him for who he is, will attempt to talk to him, play with him, and include him in things. Our pastor is one of our biggest supporters as she herself has 2 children who are bipolar and she is also a lsw/therapist who has worked with some families with Autistic children. I have a bit of an advantage as I am in charge of the sunday school and nursery at our church so I have designed our nursery to have everything in it that will not only make Kiernan comfortable but all children. Next I'm working on the classrooms, which we have been remodeling and painting murals on the walls. > > > In a message dated 6/18/2006 10:12:47 PM Eastern Standard Time, > marottafamily@... writes: > > Ann - I think you have illustrated one area where there is a gap in > service or help for individuals with disabilities - that of true participation > in church. Guest guest
Wow! Sounds like you found a good church! Is it a small church? Guest guest
It is a relatively small church... I think our active members total about 120 families.. with our attendance at around 80 people each Sunday.. we have quite a few families.. a few social workers.. and alot of adopted children.. they do a ton of outreach with different groups but it's one of those churches that when you come in.. they make you feel like family and not a visitor.. and they will help in any way possible. With my son's first diagnosis of being hearing impaired.. we were crushed when we couldn't afford the hearing aids since you have to pay for 80% upfront before they'll let you walk out of the ENT's office with them.. when my pastor found out.. the church pitched in and came up with about 70% of the money we needed and family helped with the rest. When we finally figured out that he was misdiagnosed and he wasn't going to need the hearing aids (Thank heavens for help me grow and the cleveland hearing and speech center) they never asked for the money back but that we donate the hearing aids (we couldn't return them) to another child who's family could not afford them, which we gladly did through the ENT at CHSC. Like I said.. they are family! ok ok.. enough rambling! LOL.... if anyone is in the area and would like to join us, the church is Brook Park United Methodist, 6220 Rd.. our services are sunday's at 10:30 am.. and everyone is welcome no matter what their religion, background, or difference. Hope you are all staying dry! The lightning storms tonight have just been amazing.. I'm one of the crazy ppl who sit on the porch and watch them for hours..
