We went to and Noble the other day and she was bugging me for some learn to speak French CD's. I finally relented, bought them, she took them home, popped them in the DVD, watched them for about 1/2 an hour and then proceeded to give my 4 years of high school French a run for my money. Regular kids don't do things like that. I'm grateful for the skills she has, but if I got to choose, I would rather she be more well-rounded, but we don't get to pick what they skills are or the ones they have trouble with. Who knows, I may have done a worse job.

Wow, sounds like she may perhaps "just" be gifted? I have a 9 yo w/autism who has hyperlexia. He is also gifted but he also does not know as much as he looks like he knows due to hyperlexia. Gifted kids can be quirky kids as well so maybe that's an issue with the ADD?

I think Dr. Dooby was one of the doc's they were dissing on the Akron list. I left the Akron list but I did catch that part. We take our 9 yo to see Dr. Hull. He does a nice job but the problem is it is so hard to get an appointment to see him. I have noticed that some kids do really well in quiet 1-1 interviews versus the real world.

Is Dr. Hull a psychologist? Is he in Akron or near Cleveland? We have an appointment with Dr. Chiarella, used to be head of the child psychology department at Tod's Children's Hospital and was also a professor of mine.

No, Dr. Hull is an MD doctor. I believe Dr. Dooby was abrupt with people so maybe bedside manner was not good? A friend of mine said he was so awful and chewed her out for not having her child potty trained yet. Then he got on her because she was "looking for another dx" for the child, who already had a few dx's not related to autism. We had him come talk to our local autism group a long while back and he did a nice job. But I've never gone to him with one of my kids.

Have you looked into CAPD issues (also called APD)? My ds enjoys being smart and if people tell him he's smart, he responds, "Why, of course I am." He still talks formally a lot but he's fun at any rate.

We are at the end, in the beginning, she would have qualified for Asperger's but no repetitive movements, no sequence problems, no lack of mutual sharing, no preoccupation with parts of objects. Sounds like a lot of "nots", but was as close as we got to any category. The mild add is what we ended up with after chelation. The sensory integration issues are all gone, the last one (having to change any piece of clothing that got a drop of water on it) about 4 months ago. The gross motor skills are great, fine motor skills are within age range.

Interesting, the opposite here, she knows lots more than she looks like she knows. You would never pick her out in a crowd as a "gifted" kid, she hides it, I don't know where she learned to hide it, makes me sad. When she was 3 I used to tell her she was smart, and she would say she didn't want to be smart, smart, huh? How, at 3, can you know what a colossol inconvenience it is to be too smart? She looks like all the other kids, forgive the stereotype, she is not nerdy looking. But when you sit down and talk with her one to one, it is more apparent, she knows things without having been taught them, like telling time, noone showed her, and her imagination will blow you away, but she doesn't share this with everyone.

What were the concerns with Dr. Dooby? That he did not give accurate diagnoses? That he was less than friendly? I know he vehemently disagrees with biomedical intervention, but then, so do a lot of people.

Yes, agree, gifted kids can be quirky kids, but thinking the ADD part is definitely still there, not in one-to-one interactions, but has trouble processing many conversations in large groups where there is lots of distractions/confusion going on. I agree, difficult to diagnose the social part in a psychological interview between a child and an adult, is why I always insist on going to the kid's school, seeing for myself how they interact.

Thanks for letting me process this, sorry to take up so much of the board, but this is hard, knowing what to do for her as she is not conveniently in some category.
