Guest guest
Hi Kim, You will need a diversion from that stem. Does your son like to swing? We have an indoor swing that my son loves and it is a very good alternative for him from stemming. He swings and spins in it and loves it. This helps more than stemming, it does alot for his appropriaceptive responses as well. We obtained a Sky Chair through family services with a swival hook on it. It's worth a try for you. I ordered it through our county as an occupational piece of equipment. We've recently moved from NY back to Ohio, I thought I had an idea of what to expect but the trauma of such a big move and disrupting his entire world has thrown him for a loop, we have bad stretches and then we had off the charts bad stretches. Some days are mostly okay then we regress again. I can tollerate this very slow transition and I will always with love and patience help him through the changes but he's started picking INCESENTLY at his fingers and toes. I have tried it all, liquid bandaid, taping socks around the ankles (YES CAREFULLY) It takes constant eyes on him or distraction otherwise he gravitates back to the picking, even when he gets a raw spot which is just shy of becoming a wound he acts unresponsive to the pain, unless I try to check it out then he'll winse and pull away. I've never used meds with him before and I am not an advocate for the use of drugs. (Thats not a crack against those who do there is a time and a place, I've just been blessed so far not to use them. I want to relieve his stress level. We've just moved 5 weeks ago, I haven't found a new Craniosacral therapist yet, WHich at this point indroducing new people would only stress him more. Would welcome any thoughts or suggestions Humbly Kim (Josiah's momma)

Provide lots of things to do with his hands during boring times - squishy balls of all shapes, those pillows with the microbeads, there are little puzzle toys that you can sit and fiddle with also. Finding a new therapist might not be so bad if he likes the person and the person provides relief. It might help make a new connection to the new home and make home seem more "homey" for him. I think the more he gets used to his new surroundings, the less you will see the stims. Make routines whenever possible and find good things to like about his new place - maybe a fun park or something nearby? Get a trampoline if you can - we love ours. It helps in tons of ways. It also tires them out. You could find a good OT to help with ideas as well. And be sure and keep taping up the socks, etc. or find some kind of wrap to work. I know that's not easy. I work for a little guy who bites his hand and that has been a constant work in progress to deal with. Roxanna ô¿öAutism Happens
Guest guest
Kim, HMMMmmm....Personally, I think I would try meds for now, until things settle down. I also have not wanted to use meds, But, in this case, maybe. Where are you? Maybe a sensory diet? Do you have an OT? Sorry, I wish I had better advice. ----- Original Message ----- From: ziahsmomma Sent: 5/22/2006 11:36:37 PM Subject: [ ] Suggestions needed Please! Guest guest
Yes! Roxanna, that reminds me....maybe she should get one of those thingy-ma-bobs that has like nails on it and you put your hand on it and it makes the imprint of your hand. Do you know what I'm talking about??? That might be the ticket! Those things feel S-O-O-O- good on your hands and feet and you can use light touch or press it into your hand/foot for more pressure. Check it out! ----- Original Message ----- From: Sent: 5/23/2006 10:39:04 AM Subject: Re: [ ] Suggestions needed Please! Guest guest
Hi Kim, I'm not sure which county you live in, you are probably close to the border living in Twinsburg... Anyway, you can contact your county MR/DD and ask for a behavioral intervention specialist to talk to. (If you live in Cuyahoga you can call directly to Jacquie Kasprisin - General Manager of Assistive Technology. 216-736-2709 and mention you have a referral for Behavior Intervention services through a friend by Debbie Federico who suggested calling.) Hope things get better for your son. Guest guest
Hi Kim, I have an idea that I just did for my kids. I took a medium size bin from Walmart with a lid (I made sure it was a shallow bin) and put sand in it for inside on the kitchen table. I set the rules up that if he throw it or ate it it gets put away. I am not sure if your 6 yr old likes those textures or not but my son will play for hours if I let him and it keeps his hands busy and I can get something done. Hope that helps DMHelmick1@... wrote: Hi Kim, You will need a diversion from that stem. Does your son like to swing?
