Hello Phil

Just been reading your reply to regarding the c-toma you have

in both ears like myself and was wondering how long you have had the

c-toma in your other ear? My left ear started to drain the smelly

stuff last August 2003 just days after my first surgery on my right

ear so it has been there at least 15 months now and am getting a

little concerned.

Zoe.

Like Zoe I also have a long-standing arangement to operate on the

ctoma in my other ear if only they can manage to stabilize this

one. I don't expect that's likely to happen. Sorry to say that for

some of us ctoma is something we'll be dealing with for the rest of

or lives.

Hi Zoe

Not sure when but it was perhaps the middle of last year when the doctor discovered it. I still have to attend the clinic every month so I lose track of what happened at which appointment. That also means the doctor is aware of what it's doing and I'm still on the surgery list. It's another kind of ctoma like the other that's part in the middle ear and part eaten through the ear canal and mastoid so some of it can be got at at each appointment. I have a sense of fullness in the ear, some pain and hearing loss but it pales in comparison with the bad ear. Discharge is, I think caused by infection getting into the ctoma and I've been hyper-cautious the last few years and managed to avoid any kind of infection. Remarkable since I'd had a constantly draning and smelly ear for many years previously. Whenever I see the doctor the first thing he asks me is if there has been any ear drainage. It's the infection that makes the ctoma much more destructive and urgent.

Hi Phil

Thanks for your reply why do we have to have this horrible thing in

both ears it's bad enough coping with it in one ear but two is

taking the rip. Anyway I'm a bit concerned about the ear drainage

that you mentioned, mine has been draining for 15 months the

horrible smelly stuff and I've had several different ear drops and

ear cleaning and nothing seems to stop it. It gets worse in the

evening and then drains during the night. Not a day has gone by when

I havn't worn cotton wool in both ears at bedtime. Should I be more

worried about this?

Zoe.
