Guest guest
Hello lani I have had the same surgery you are going to have, but it was not done all in one session. The mastoidectomy is the major part, where they clean out the mastoid bone area. This is a spongy looking bony area behind the ear, and because of this, c-toma cells can easily get trapped and grow. The canal wall down (CWD) is part of the procedure, and it leaves a larger cavity in the mastoid area (behind the ear) and middle ear. You can't notice it after it is healed. In most cases this is the method that eradicates the disease. It used to be that reconstruction (ossiculoplasty, new ossicles, or hearing bones) could not be done following a mastoidectomy, but now they are doing it much more often and with greater success. It is usually done well after the initial surgery is healed, to make sure that the cholesteatoma is gone. Tinnitus is noise that only you hear. Like ringing in the ears. Sometimes normal hearing people get it after being exposed to loud noises... for them it usually goes away, but for people with middle ear disease it can be a permanent annoyance. If you have it, you usually learn to live with it. Sometimes it seems louder, and sometimes you forget that it is there, cause you get so used to it. I have it all the time. The thought of surgery can be pretty scary, but it is amazing how well most people recover from it. Usually you are admitted to hospital for one nite. There is an incision along the back of the ear, and sometimes a small one if front of the ear. Anyway, I hope this information helps. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. There are a lot of members here who have been through this same thing, and have a lot of good advice. -- ok english please =) I just came back from the docs ...she read me the results of the scan...and i had her write it down for me what i am gonna need...i figured if she wasnt gonna explain it...i could come to you guys and ask! ok...I am sure its common here so here's what she said...... canal wall down, mastoidectomy, ossicialoplasty....make any sense? im supposed to get that done in jan...but i have no clue. i was reading some previous posts and i saw a word...tinnitus...what is that? am i gonna have that??? sounds scary. any help would be great! you can post me a messege here or messege me on . either way that would rock! big big hugs to all for being so awesome! Guest guest
You came to the right place. Alot of it I am still getting a hang of myself. I can tell you that Tinnitus is a ringing or strange buzzing in your ear/s. You will not die from it, it is caused for many reasons, the main reasons are that you have been exposed to loud noises for long lengths of time, perhaps you work around long noises, also that you have some sort of hearing loss. There are other factors relating to tinnitus, if anything it would be more annoying to you then anything else. It is not a life or death situation. Phil and a few other people are more knowledgable then what I am especially when it comes to Ctomas. I can always help on the hearing side of things as I am an Audiologist. Must get back to work. Let us know how you go.
