The Miami Valley SERRC (MVSERRC) is sponsoring an upcoming Parent Conference on March 4th from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM. There is no cost for attending the parent conference, but registration is required. Childcare services are not being provided. Tom had been a special education professional for many years before the birth of his son who has Asperger Syndrome. Braukman was the Associate Director of the Southwestern Ohio SERRC for 27 years. He worked in the field of special education for 28 years before the birth of his grandson with Asperger Syndrome. Both father and grandfather struggled as any other parent and grandparent before coming to the realization that their child and grandchild were different than other children. Both utilized their professional backgrounds to identify and to maximize their son and grandson’s potential and celebrate their struggles. PC2 Surviving and Enjoying Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (10:40 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.) Presented by: Braukman, Learning Keys Inc. Much has been written by the medical profession on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This session will present tried and proven solutions to suspecting children with ADHD at home and at school. PC3 Estate Planning for Children with Special Needs (10:40 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.) Presented by: Chuck Locy, Ohio Valley Group, New England Financial Learn how to properly establish special needs trusts and how to provide for the future of your child with special needs. PC4 Enhancing Literacy Skills at Home (10:40 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.) Presented by: Dr. Tom Diebold, Central Ohio SERRC This session will provide an overview of common reading problems and intervention strategies and materials to enhance the mastery of English/literacy skills. Session will include overview of strategies, free on-line software and support materials available from the Miami Valley SERRCs lending library! PC5 Testing - What does it all mean? (10:40 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.) Presented by: Moira Laughlin, Greene County ESC Do the results of your child’s multifactored evaluation (MFE) and other tests confuse you? Do you wonder what norm-referenced tests and bell curves mean? In this session on interpreting test results, all those things and more will be talked about in plain English! PC6 How to Help with Math Homework Using Household Items (1:10 - 2:30 p.m.) Presented by: Borchers, Ross Local Schools Did you know that kitchen gadgets, buttons, leftover bathroom tiles and other “stuff†around the house can be used to help teach Math? You can help your children learn a variety of mathematical concepts from Ohio’s Academic Content Standards just by using everyday household items. Also learn about the Ohio Achievement tests your children take at school. PC7 Parents and the IEP (Individual Education Program) (1:10 - 2:30 p.m.) Presented by: Benham, Kettering City Schools Your child’s education is guided by the goals and services you and the other IEP team members determine will best meet his unique needs. Learn how to understand your child’s IEP and to use it as a tool to ensure your child benefits from her education. PC8 Transition from School to Adult Life (1:10 - 2:30 p.m.) Presented by: Suzanne Beck, Miami Valley SERRC How early is too early to begin preparing your son or daughter for adult life? How are plans for transition a part of the IEP? What tools are there to help with this process? These topics and more will be discussed during the session.
