One, they can give periodic testing with the same or similiar tests they used to diagnose. This can show you progress that has been made and areas in need of improvement. Two, they can help you implement peer-reviewed interventions, e.g. ABA. Three, they can look at what your team is doing, including your school district and give input and directions to head. There are other things they can do that I have missed and like any other position on your team investigate, interview and stay on top of all the people working on your son's behalf. Not all psychologists are created equal or have the same background and training. Make sure they are a nice fit to your team.Shane

I've been a member for awhile.. but just so busy lately I havne't had time to really catch up on posts and respond at all.We take our 4 yr old son who is on the spectrum to Dr. Jeff Silver-Riskin with Oak Tree Behavioral Health in Middleburg Hts. Their # is 440-816-5790. As far as I am aware they do take Medicaid as well as other insurances and self-pay.We were recommended to him services by another therapist who said he worked wonderfully with Autistic children and their families and I will fully agree to that. We've seen him for 6 months now and the visits there help alot. He has helped me with IEP and school issues. With how to cope with or redirect certain behaviors that my son has and many other things and just general understanding of Autism and how my son's brain may be interpreting things that we are trying to teach him. He is also very knowledgable about the laws for special needs children and will help direct you to places for assitance in areas he can't help with.Hope that may help some of you! Guest guest
I thought she was a neurologist? I have heard that she is great. Do you usually see the neurologist first for the diagnosis and then the phsycologist? My son is 6. He was diagnosed at 3 by a neurologist. She watched him for a year before giving the diagnosis and then said she doesn't need to see him anymore. She said to continue to speech, OT, and PT. Does anybody continue to see there neurologist after the diagnosis has been made? Do you also have a psychologist? I want to make sure that I have all of the people in place for my son's team. No. She is a psychologist - a PhD. She does testing and we were going to have her do testing for one of our boys but the wait was almost up to 2 years at that time. There is a psychologist over at Children's in Akron who specializes in autism and is part of the autism unit. She came and talked to our local autism group not long ago and I thought she was really very informative and knowledgable about autism and testing. I don't know what her wait would be but her name is Dr. DePolo. Roxanna ô¿öAutism Happens
Guest guest
Debbie, Our first step was through the county Help Me Grow program and then we went to a neurologist who diagnosis was PDD-NOS and now we are seeing a behavioral neurologist for a more specific diagnosis. We were told to take him to a phsychologist but I spent 3 hours on the phone trying to find one that took our insurance or that did not have a long waiting list with no luck. As long as you see someone that can diagnose and then if they think you have the need for a physchologist go from there. Hope this helps, Debbie Ranallo <Corkwood@...> wrote: I thought she was a neurologist? I have heard that she is great. Guest guest
Would you mind saying what hospital he is affiliated with, if any? Or email me privately. Chris----- Original Message ----- From: Trish Sent: Saturday, May 13, 2006 3:21 PMSubject: [ ] Re: PsychologistAs far as a Neurologist is concerned, I don't see why it is necessary unless you are dealing with seizures or truly need behavior meds (which seems to be rare among those who are doing biomedical). My dd and I brought Noah to a Nuerologist on the advice of her Ped. All he did was to confirm the autism dx. At our first visit, I told him that we were giving him ProEFA and were looking into other supplements. He just shrugged his shoulders and said "yeah...supplements...some people try them...they can't hurt." Two visits and 9 months after we had been seeing Dr. DeMio, this same Dr. was amazed at my grandson's progress. I credited it to the DAN! Protocol. He asked me to tell him more about it. For 25 minutes (out of a 30 min appt) I proceeded to "educate" him. He was interested and asked for the Doctor's phone number. I followed up and asked Dr. Demio if this man had called him. He said that he had, and although he wasn't sure if he agreed with everything, he was very polite and seemed interested. They talked for a half an hour. Now I was impressed, until I spoke to the mom of a kindergartener who had an upcoming appt. with Dr. DeMio. At her appt with this Nuerologist, she mentioned her intent to try the DAN! Protocol. I was shocked to hear that he responded with "Don't waste your money. It doesn't work. You're better off taking your family on a good vacation!" VACATION???? Has he ever tried taking an autistic child out to a restaurant???? Needless to say, my dd cancelled her next appointment with him. So did this mom. BTW, my dd is still fighting with her insurance co. for the $110.00 that the last appointment cost! It's unethical for me to mention his name here, but if anyone is thinking of seeing a Neurologist and wants to know who this is, you can contact me off list. - In , kneeleee@.. wrote:>> > In a message dated 5/12/2006 2:50:55 PM Eastern Standard Time, > Corkwood@... writes: > Does anybody continue to see there neurologist after the diagnosis has been made?
