I am a 35 year old man who is in otherwise good health.I was

diagnosed with a cholesteatoma in my right ear about three weeks

ago. I have a history of ear problems and had a tympanoplasty in the

same ear when I was 18. I have not had health insurance for 10

years. I have applied for health insurance recently and have not yet

scheduled surgery. I am getting married in 3 weeks(July 24th) with a

two week honeymoon in the Carribean. I have asked my doctor (who is

seeing me off the record because my friend is his audiologist)if it

would be ok to wait until after the honeymoon to have the surgery

and he said yes. In the two previous visits he cleared all of the

pus and bacteria out of my ear and gave me free samples of

antibiotic ear drops called Ciprodex. I took the drops for two weeks

and returned to see him when he told me the supposed good news about

being able to wait to have the sugery. At that time he also told me

my ear was clear and I no longer needed to take the drops. Of

course, two days after seeing him, I started to have very bad pain

around my ear/headaches. every other day or so... Pain that Tylenol

nor Aleve seems to help. Does anybody have any advice on pain? I am

interested in any experiences someone may have had not only with OTC

medications (as I cannot get prescription medication until I am

insured) or with non-Western remedies, i.e. herbal, Chinese

medicine, etc. I would also like to hear about prescription

medicines that may have helped, as it is possible that the doctor

would provide me with a sample until my insurance is processed.

Thanks for any help or insight that anyone can provide.

Sorry you have to deal with this so close to your wedding! As far as

the pain I had to deal with prior to my surgery it was tough. I was

on Tylenol 4's 4x's a day for 4 months and even that stopped

helping.I think the generic form of Tylenol 3 and 4 are pretty cheap

even out of pocket. My pain did not go away until the cholesteatoma

was removed and the infection cleared up. Good luck.

Hello,

I have treated my childrens ( and others ) ear pain with reflexology. None had c- tomas but it worked to take away their earaches and might help with your pain. On your palm side, between the knuckles of your ring finger and pinky on the right side ( whatever side your pain is on ) press , you should feel pain in your hand if you are in the right spot. press and hold until the pain goes away , in children it usually relieves the earache in a coupleof minutes adults take longer. maybe as long as five minutes but hopefully sooner. also you may want to search for tender spots around the bottoms of the last three fingers on the palm above the knuckles . press and hold each tender spot to help relieve pain. the way it works is that there are nerve ending in you hand for all of your body and when pressed and you have pain the brain sends endorphins to the spot on your hand which also relieves the the pain in

the corresponding body part . Also be warned that there are alot of books on reflexology out there and many of them have different spots for the parts of the body but the spot i told you has worked for my son and the others that i have used it on . The right spot will hurt, that is how you know you have the right spot and you have to press pretty hard. you can ease into it but the more pressure the better. How you find something to tide you over.
