Guest guest
Sorry to be bombarding all of you will questions, but I had another situation come up this morning. My son has a 1:1 aide in his preschool class. There is also 1 1/2 classroom aides in his class of eight students. Last summer, the district started a summer program 2x a week for 6 weeks. My son only went to the program the last 3 days because I refused to send him without a 1:1 aide. It is my position that the summer program was made up of the neediest 8 children in the entire preschool program. If he needs a 1:1 aide in the regular school year when the 8 children in his class have a variety of skill levels, he clearly would need a 1:1 aide in the summer. My other fear was that if I gave in and sent him to the summer program without an aide, the district would say that he was fine in the summer and didn't need one during the regular school year. This year they are having the same program. I wanted to make sure I didn't spend this summer trying to negotiate summer services again, so I left a message yesterday with the school psych. Today, I was told that there would be one classroom aide for the summer and that they would not provide a 1:1 aide for my son. So, essentially they are pulling the neediest 8 children from a pool of 40 and putting one teacher and one classroom aide in the class. I will contact the special ed director and begin the battle, but I wanted to know if other parents have had similar issues with their district. I guess I feel like every time I turn around I'm picking another fight. Thanks, Colleen
