Guest guest
Pete, the issue of weight loss is directly related to the ability to eat, rather than whether or not you have achalasia. We don't lose weight because of the disease, we lose weight because we can't eat. If you can get some sort of treatment so that you can eat again, the weight loss will end. If you don't get treatment that allows you to eat, you'll continue to lose weight. And having achalasia does not mean you'll never be overweight... in fact, after years of not eating, when people have surgery they usually gain weight quite quickly because they want to eat all the things they haven't been able to eat for so very long! Debbi I am still a little new to this. So I have a question.I recently acquired Achalasia. I have loss about 12 pounds over the last couple of months.I am still losing slowly, but consistantly. Many said they wish they had my problem so they could lose weight. I don't mind the weight loss, I could lose another 10 or so. Maybe this condition can be seen as a benefit. I'll never over eat, and i'll probably never be over weight. But does the weight loss continue or does it tail off?
Guest guest
Pete, I was 19 when I had surgery. I was never heavy but I lost a lot of weight. I stopped getting on the scale at 113 because it depressed me. I imagine my weight would have stablized somewhere. Today, post surgery (and middle aged) I'm a comfortable 165. Guest guest
Pete, People say that " they wish they had that problem " to me too. I am normally only 115-120 lbs. though. I am now 105...don't think it's going down anymore because there's nothing there to lose. I would get your medical attention right away, before you can't keep meal replacements down and your cheek bones and spine are so noticeable (as in my case. =) Happy to hear you were diagnosed so quickly. That will save you some grief. > Pete, > > I was 19 when I had surgery. I was never heavy but I lost a lot of weight. I stopped getting on the scale at 113 because it depressed me. Guest guest
I have the same problem. . I reduced my calorie intake and, since my operation, increased (from nothing) my aerobic activity, and didn't lose a pound (over 2 months). People keep saying it's because I'm 62. But only 3 years ago I weighed 130. I feel like in order to lose weight I would either have to work out like an athlete every day or not eat anything, and I'm not sure I'd lose weight the latter way anyway. (Just kidding -- there MUST be some way. One thing I've noticed is that all those miracle diets that are taking up a lot of TV time nowadays require exercise. So if a person went on the diet and didn't exercise, would they lose weight? Or if a person just exercised and didn't go on the diet, wouldn't they lose weight?) Ann Weight Loss This got E-mailed to me by accident. - Doug ------- hi sophie, i think are you the one who lost a lot of weight????? I think that is just great...my question is how how did you lose that much weight. I cannot seem to lose even 5 pounds and since I've had knee problems and surgery I cant run or even walk fast enough to get the weight off. I swim at lease 30 minutes a day and do leg lifts and other things. but to no avail. please help Ive also cut down on my eating. I think I am stuck. help Lin

Guest guest
>Is there any possibility that the Kombucha culture gets mutated when it is continuously sub cultured. - Mutations refer to genetic accidents that happen from a fertilization process. KT gives no seed and its ALWAYS cultured from a previous culture, therefore is always subcultured. The " mutations " or changes that can occurr happen from bad conditions whereby some of the yeasts or bacteria in the symbiotic cluture are damaged or killed. Even then, there may be traces of the original left and a couple of good conditon brews may restore the original vigor. As for weigh loss, the KT regulates the body's metabolism so your appetite and caloric requirements more closely match. Most KT drinkers over time have lowered cravings for starches and sugars. Ibn addition to this factor the KT itself appears to have a fat burning component but I don't know what that is. Guest guest
Jan is down about 60 pounds in the past four years. That's a lot with her 4'8 " height. She likes how she looks and feels and is working to stay there. You don't want to try her weight loss program, but the outcome has been remarkable. She does regularly weigh herself and does diet and exercise modification when the trend starts to go in the wrong direction. Of course she does have to pedal her exercise bike in her apartment to get sound from her TV ;-) We walked a couple of miles yesterday with her jogging some of the time. She looks and feels good. Tomorrow she goes back to her own place after a check-up at the bone marrow transplant clinic. Guest guest
Melinda People loose differently. I have seen people post that they have lost 80-100 in a six months and others ten. I guess the point is that you are learning a totally different life and it takes time. As long as the scale is heading down I wouldn't worry. The fill you got may have made all the difference in the world. Donna Weight loss Hello I had my surgery on Dec. 23 04 since my surgery I have lost a total of 31 lbs is that slow? It seems like this has been a very slow process. I went in for a fill yesterday and I think Im finally at where I need to be. Im getting frustrated, maybe Im to hard on myself. Any advice would be appreciated. If there are any good books please let me know. Thanks Melinda

Guest guest
Melinbda, You're doing very well, not slow at all. The average weight loss with the band is 1-2 # a week AFTER you get to a good fill level. Sounds as if you haven't had a great fill level yet - hopefully this new one will do the trick. If you've lost this well even without a good fill, that is even better than most! We all want to lose faster, but remember that it took us many years to become so obese, and it will take many months and maybe several years to lose it all safely. Band loss is slow and healthy, and in a way that will help your metabolism to normalize and give you time to work thru the many lifestyle changes that are needed to be able to maintain the loss later. Banding is not supposed to be a " quick fix " - but a permanent fix, as long as you learn the things needed and make some permanent changes. Along with s good fill, we need to learn a lot about better food choices, eating habits, and exercsie. These all are needed for good band loss too. Let us know if you need suggestions in those areas. Guest guest
Hi Ann, I'm new here but already I can tell you have a sense of humour. This was the first post I read and I was thinking, goodness...5'6 " , 158lbs...and she feels fat!!! Then I saw your comments at the end of the post...phew...for a moment I thought I'd come to the wrong board (those needing to lose 100lbs or more - don't worry, I certainly qualify!!!!!). In defense of Ms Elephant, though, I'm also 5'6 " and my long term goal weight is 140lbs (or 64kg in Australian speak). Perhaps she has never had much to lose before and the 18lbs seems daunting. But...I digress...enough commiserating over the skinny one. I'm here to rub shoulders and other fleshy bits with those with much to lose. I'm 46, married and have three sons (24,22 and 19)and work from home as a medical typist (16 years now...and I still enjoy it for the most part). You name the diet and I'm more than likely to have been on it. Currently following a wholefoods approach, fresh foods, veges, fruit, non-processed stuff, salads, beans, etc. Sounds good, huh? I was doing really well but then caught the 'flu and for the past two and a half weeks have not been sticking with my plan. I weigh in tomorrow (appointment with the scales in my bedroom!). I think I've put on about 6lbs since I've been sick. But I need to accept this and move ahead. I hope to get to know you all better. Cheers and best wishes, ozgal (In Australia " Aussie " is pronounced " Ozzie " (hence the oz in ozgal). > UGH!!! Anyone else want to kill this woman?!! This message was on > another list I'm on. Nothing I like more than to step into the main street and hear trams rumbling by. Also, I'm 5 minutes from the fashion mecca of Melbourne (Chapel Street, South Yarra)and am privy to many great cafes that serve wonderful coffee. I don't get tempted to spend on clothes here though. My husband and I did visit Mauritius about 7 years ago for two weeks, sans kids - the honeymoon we never had when we were married in 1979. It was a Club Med resort but we also struck up a friendship with one of the beach hawkers and he took us home to a " typical " Mauritian dinner. My husband is a fussy food eater - so I had to be the " well mannered " one to eat the chicken curry (chicken claws were visible!). Somehow I managed to swallow it down. It was a lovely holiday, though, so relaxing. I was at my goal weight then - 64kg (140lbs approx) and did not put on any weight at the resort, even though food was plentiful. We spent most days playing table tennis, walking on the beach, swimming, etc. I think the exercise must really have helped. Unfortunately, I'm the heaviest now I've ever been. Even heavier than my highest pregnancy weight of 93.5kg. (Currently I'm 107.2kg). It's nice to be part of the 100 club and lovely to hear from you Ann. Cheers, ozgal ***** P.S. Is there a way to change font colour when replying? I can't find a way to do it.
Guest guest
lie, I heard it all before too. How "if only I could just stop eating, I could lose". Or "why don't you try this one pill I saw on tv the other day, it claims to suck out your belly fat." or " If you would just get off your A$$ you could lose some of that booty" and all of this from people that supposedly care about me. First off, you will never have to stick to a "diet" again once you have restriction. You can still eat what you want in moderation. I still eat pizza, just less of it. That is why I LOVE the band. It makes me feel like a "normal" person eating "normal" portions. You control the size of those portions with the amount of fill you have. Do you have a friend that could go with you to the hospital or a family member? It is really nice to have someone there who is supportive and not going to hinder your healing. Please bring someone along who can help you and be supportive. I thought mine was going to be a butt the whole time we were there because he hadn't really showed me a supportive side that much, but he surprised me by being the BEST and showing concern and really going through heck laying on a flat cushion for 2 nights LOL. About financing, I wish you luck. I had to get a loan for half of it, and use my tax return for the other half. You have come to the right place as far as finding a clean and safe hospital. Guest guest
The people at the hospital are wonderful. Everyone you meet will be so helpful and kind. It is nice to bring someone with you but I went by myself and it was a very good experience. Ernesto picked me up at the airport. He probably wished that I had brought someone else to talk to before we got to Mexicali! He even took me to get some contacts for my daughter. Yolanda was so kind. I had many good visits with her. Dr. A was great. He let me use his cell phone to call home because I did not have one. He explained everything so thoroughly. He answered all of my questions. did too. He was really great to visit when he had some time. He was good to answer my questions too. I did not want to bring my husband or anyone else. This was my adventure and it was great! I thought of it as a vacation from laundry and cooking! If this is really what you want to do then do it. Find a friend to come with you or come by yourself. You will be taken care of and you will have no need for worries. Weight loss My husband thinks this surgery is alot of money and I don't think he really has faith in me sticking with any diet. Of course even when I try he sabatoses it anyway. I am determined this time and yes chances are I'll have to walk into the hospital by myself. My husband doesn't like going into medical facilities anyway. He almost passed out when I was in labor with our first son. Others think I am being extreme and that there are other ways to lose the weight. But they really don't understand that I have tried the other ways. And no magical pill is going to do it too!! I get so angry when I see all the diet pill commercials anymore with their false promises. But I am being persistent in researching ways to finance the surgery and right now I don't care how far I have to travel to get it done as long as the facility is clean and safe and the doctors know what they are doing. Thanks for letting me vent. Rose rjcody54@... SINCERELY,ROSALIE CODY Click here to donate to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort.
