Guest guest
Danette, you do NOT want to go to Yellowstone in September! The best time to go is in July. June is cooler in the evenings, if you would be okay with that. They celebrate the employee's Christmas holiday on August 9th, and by then the snows have just barely started to fall, or soon to be on their way. It gets very, very cold by mid August. Yellowstone can be traveled by car very easily, and several of the sites are ramped, so a wheelchair or scooter can go across. I believe that Yellowstone has a number you can call and they can inform you of any problems or what is available. I also tried to locate it, but I do know that Wyoming has a bureau that you can call to see if you can gain more info. I hope this helps! I am thinking about going in the early fall (September) and I need to figure out which facility would be the best for me. I use a wheelchair but can walk a little bit around a room. I actually oftentimes prefer a non handicap accessible room because things tend to be higher up. I am also wondering about the trails and things at Yellowstone as far as how accessible they are. I was disappointed that I couldn't find any info on the net and thought that maybe (but hopefully not) that was a bad sign. We have thought about getting a jogger stroller for that time for hikes and stuff but I wasn't sure. I would like to be able to use my electric wheelchair as much as possible as that gives me more independence. What about rafting? I know there is a trip that will take children that are under 6 so I am assuming that would probably be OK for me (I have a bad back and can't swim). Any other suggestions you might be able to provide would be appreciated too. Does anyone know of any websites that are for people with disabilities that like to travel? I think I had heard of one before but couldn't remember. Thanks everyone! Danette Baker Spokane, WA scraps-of-joy@... Guest guest
Let me share a silly story with the group. My brother thought it would be a good idea and go pick up his girlfriend who was working in Yellowstone. He, my sis and myself took off in shirts, sleeveless shirts, and sandals. We had a tiny tent, and 'one' blanket in the car, that was always kept there. We came up on August 8th, and it snowed that night. We absolutely froze to death. I have never been so cold in my entire life as that night. That is when we learned about the employee holiday. When I called the travel agent, she told me that July is the best time to go. The crowds are usually thinning down by the 15th or so of July. The busiest day of the year is July 4th. Have fun! - Love Deb Danette <scraps-of-joy@...> wrote: Thanks Debi! I was thinking that we might want to go a bit earlier because all of the educational programs seem to end on the 1st of September. The reason I was thinking fall was because I was hoping to avoid the summer crowd but it seems that the park begins to kind of close down by September. I REALLY don't want to go when it is cold or it will be somewhat of a wasted trip. Thanks for the tip! Danette Baker Spokane, WA scraps-of-joy@... Guest guest
Yellowstone, Grand Tetons and the Rockefeller Parkway inbetween them ALL have handicap accessible trails to somepoint. I know some of the geysers are accessible like Old Faithful...upper and lower falls trails were iffy when I was there in 1989 and I doubt you would really want to go on those since I, being acrophobic thought the trails a little too skinny with a long drop down. Then there was the " If you meet a bear on the trail " sign...yeah no thanks. Depending on your money situation would determine where you want to stay but I believe all lodgings are accessible. You want to watch what time frame you go in as some facilities close early. Moose are cool at that time of year and the elk are migrating and mating. Don't go near the buffalo...I don't care how docile they look. When I worked there a Japanese tourist was thrown in the air and was killed because they wanted a picture. So of course the park rangers just had to kill the evil buffalo. Rafting is way fun and life preservers are provided for everyone. So are the trail rides...but they don't provide seat cushions. :-) Food is expenive. If you can stock up at a grocery store for snack stuff that would be better. Film is expensive so do the same. Hope this helps. Karin Redston
Guest guest
Thanks! Where are the Grand Tetons located in relationship to Yellowstone? I heard that the passes for Yellowstone are also good for there too. Danette Baker Spokane, WA scraps-of-joy@...
