Dr. Goldberg told me the dark circles are from allergies and congestion. He

referred to them as " allergic shiners " . My son has them, but they've improved

since he's been on decongestants, nasal spray, and a humidifier in his room when

the weather is dry.

Hard to fall asleep

I have a 7 years old daughter with autism. We have been on protocol

since May of 2002. For the past 2 years it takes my daughter 2-3 hours to

fall asleep. If she is not sleeping by 12:00 AM I am giving her Benadryl.

So far that is the only thing that can help. Also she has dark circles

under her eyes. Yes, we went through Valtrex and that did not help. After

reading an article on phenol - I took raisons and grapes off her diet. That

helped alot with the headaches but not dark circles. I do not know if

sleeping and dark circles are related. Any ideas?

Donna....what decongestant is your son taking? Which nansal spray?

And how old is your son? DR G wants us to possibly start a

decongestant and nasal spray soon so I was curious as to what works.

I've also always thought of dark circles as allergy indicators but recently

learned that they can also be a sign of a stressed liver. One more thing to

consider if you've taken out all the allergens (though next to impossible I

know with inhalants).

Be careful with humidifiers especially if you live in a mold-prone area since

they can lead to major mold problems in the room you use them in, especially

if you have wall paper. Speaking from experience here :(.

As for getting to sleep, in addition to looking at foods, consider using a

weighted blanket. You can make one or buy them from many places that sell OT

items online. They're a bit pricey but well worth the money if you have a

wiggly or sleepless kid, especially one that has difficulty getting settled

at night. Lavendar aromatherapy oil sprayed on the pillow can also help

sometimes. We used to have a wonderful pillow made from flaxseed with

lavendar we could heat in the microwave. Putting that in the bed with my son

always sent him off to sleep quickly even when he was going through his

night-partying periods. Doing a websearch on aromatherapy pillows will

probably bring up several sources since I've seen them at many wholistic

health fairs recently.

Thank you very much for the info. Believe it or not last week we did a

blood test to check liver and it was a little bit elevated.

Hi, sorry I've taken so long to answer. We've been out of town...went to

Disneyland/CA Adventure for 's birthday (went great -- loved the special

needs pass!).

We've been giving Zyrtec at night - on it's own I'm not all that

impressed, but the nasal spray is Nasonex, and it really seems to do the job of

keeping him clear. They were both prescribed by Dr. Goldberg. During the day,

Dr. G wanted us to give the yellow Triaminic if he needed it, but 's ears

and cheeks turned bright red, probably from the coloring, so we switched to

Dimetapp Cold & Allergy, but only if he's obviously congested. When he has a

cold, Dr. G has us use Nasocort spray instead of the Nasonex.

Yes, very high salicylate.

Either

Some people are allergic to pineapple. If so, don't give enzymes with

bromelain.

Bananas and avocados are both high amine, avocados are also high salicylate.

Consider phenol issues

Can be both. Which enzymes are you using?

Can also be yeast, which antibiotics will tend to increase.

Can dark circles under the eyes be an indication of an allergy to the

enzymes? Neither of my kids have shown signs of food allergies.

Dark circles can be a problem with the enzymes, yeast die off, or

that he is eating a food that the enzymes don't address.

Yes, or allergy to one of the foods he is eating that is not helped

by the enzymes.

Which enzymes?

Something is not tolerated. Might be enzymes, might be another food

or supplement she is eating that the enzymes are not addressing.

Might be something else like an environmental factor.

A series of liver flushes, plus liver supporting antioxidants and raw

foods, will do it too.

Hi

It is nice to hear that Ian is doing well and sleeping well too. I

forgot the name of that dark line, but it is a sign of allergies.

Shouldn't have anything to do with the helmet. Is he sniffling or

sneezing? Or did you try out a new food?

Like Sandy said, dark circles can be a sign of allergies, they're

called " allergy shiners " . Being springtime, it may just be a

coincidence in timing with the helmet.

Hi ,

Aside from the dark circles I'm glad Ian is doing well in his

helmet. I'm sure if he's sleeping as much the circles aren't from

the helmet. Like the others suggested, maybe he's just reacting to

something new in the springtime air.

AAhhh - interesting .... thanks so much for your thoughts. I'm so glad to hear it may not be the helmet. There are so many things flying out in the air outside I wouldn't doubt that it is some reaction to pollen, etc. Thanks again!

Epsom Salts baths? No fenol enzymes?

Hi there my ASD daughter has had dark circles under her eyes since she

was 6 months old, and she is 23 months old now. We have tried

everything, allergy medicine, gf/cf diet, yeast treatment, melatonin,

and rotation diet to try to see any food intolerances. Nothing has

helped the dark circles. I hate them because they make her look really

sick. If this is a vitamin deficiency I would really like to know, so

I can get rid of these dark circles.

Dark circles are supposed to be a symptom of allergy. Blood gets

trapped because of nasal inflammation, so it looks dark for the same

reason that a bruise does--extra blood under the skin.

It's funny, someone asked me this same question yesterday because my

son had huge dark circles under his eyes, and my first thought was

allergy as well.

Then, someone reminded me of the TIME CHANGE (setting the clocks back)

and that he had been awake at 5 a.m. every day this week. I think

that is a major factor!!!

If anything he's sleeping more than usual. Long afternoon naps.

I will think about whether his diet has changed.

The other thing is with it being fall there's a lot of mold in the air.

I do remember, though, a specific vitamin deficiency being mentioned with

this. ?

Thanks,

-Sara.
