Guest guest Posted November 10, 2006 Report Posted November 10, 2006 Amy, I was diagnosed with uterine cancer three years ago, had a complete hysterectomy and all the other stuff that goes with fighting cancer. Inaddition, I have had my own share of possible breast cancer concerns in recent years too, as family members (AP's) have had this type of cancer. A dear lady (LP) in my Pain Group had to have a double mastectomy this year, and just completed a long, and very trying round of chemo. Next week she gets to begin the radiation, and we all there are so hoping and praying for the very best for her. I do not know if any other LP's have also battled breast cancer or any other types of cancers in our midst, because I have not had the pleasure of knowing any other LP's until last year. So I cannot begin to respond to that part of your questions. Regarding your daughter though, and insurance, MY suggestion to you is this: take all your medical records and your family's which detail the cancer history, besides your daughter, to a oncology doctor. I am sure with his/her help, you may be able to obtain a waiver with your insurance, since there is a obvious predisposition to breast cancer within the family, so the necessary mammograms can be obtained to monitor her condition. Through the years, I have had to seek insurance waivers of my own, due to extraordinary conditions and circumstances not usually covered in " their rules, " and was successful in most instances. Of course my doctors had to fully back me too, but that was never a problem. Good luck! Adelaide In a message dated 11/11/06 6:33:08 A.M. Guest guest Posted November 11, 2006 Report Posted November 11, 2006 Hi everyone, I must say I have read some weird things here about Wal-Mart!! All I can say is Target truly stinks. I have been there on 4 occasions and found that the clothes are truly over priced and mostly sleezy for my YOUNG daughters. I shop at walmart (OH NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!) and I spend about 500.00 on 6 YES 6 kids for school clothes AND supplies!! Pretty good if you ask me. This is enough clothes to last them EACH a week without doing laundry! YEAH!! AND there is a big enough selection that I am not buying sleezy clothes. Though yes, they do carry them. I found Target (my Target anyways) stocks mostly clothes I see on kids that my kids are not allowed to hang around with. I do ALL my christmas shopping at Wal-Mart. I spend about 5-6 hundred every year and FULLY stock my tree with qaulity AND quantity!! I'll remind you now, we have SIX KIDS. BTW, my christmas shopping includes 2 hat drawing gifts (that is the family thing for adults at mine and his moms house. Each hat draw gift has a value of 10 to 20) and the price includes my husband and I (we have a limit of 10) as well as 7 neices and nephews! I have NEVER run into ANY issues at Wal-Mart with my daughter accept that one time there was a child racing around on a scooter (the ones they reserve for the disabled) and I had to insist that the kid get off. When the employee asked why and I said " he has jumped off it to run 2 times since I walked into this store - And I am not even beyond you (the greeter), so obviously he doesn't need it. " , the employee went immediately to a supervisor who got the child off of the scooter. Mother was pissed off! He told her she could shop somewhere else if she did not like it because my daughter NEEDED it! One BAD thing. WAL-MART is no longer doing lay-a-way!! I got my X-mas layaway in time but, they said P/U is by 12/11 and that is it for the layaway dept.!!!! Oh crap!!!! Lay-a-Way is HOW I shop so cheap!! I go EVERY week and pay a couple of bucks and say, " please check the sales. " I save an average of 200.00 at the end of every lay-a-way! I leave it for the max time and then, if I see a sale coming the next week in a flyer, I will go to lay-a-way and request an extension! They always give me one extra week! YEAH!! Lay-a-way OVER!!!!!!!!! BOOOOO HOOOOOOOOO. Ok, onto more things. Ok, for the SQUIMISH, don't bother reading! I will be bringing up breasts and uteruses!!!!!!!!!! As far as I am concerned it is a G subject by todays standards (have you seen Shreck? I mean REALLY SEEN it? Lithgows prince charecter looks under his sheet to see what is rising!! - one of my kids pointed that out to me at age 7 by saying, " Mom, why is his sheet bumpy? Why is he looking under it? " ). SO......... lets all be adults and NOT bitch about REAL life, SERIOUS questions. Further, Lets NOT get crabby if I state the OBVIOUS!! My Grandmother (Maternal) died from Breast Cancer. She was 64 years old. My cousin (Maternal) had breast cancer at age 22 (RADICAL mastectomy) and Uterine cancer at age 23 (TOTAL HYSTERECTOMY). My Mom had to have an aweful proceedure last year during which they repeatedly stuck a biopsy needle into her breast while in a mamogram like machine to remove a 'mass of tissue' which turned out to be NON cancerous (but it was her mom who died of BC). I am 36 and have had mammography performed since the age of 30. Last year I was scared because I had to go TWO times due to a mass. They determined it was a 'fibrocystic breast' . I am going again next week for a mammogram. This time, I have great pain as of two months ago (in the fibrocystic breast) and lumps (I know that type of tissue is more lumpy). My concern is this...................................... My OB/GYN said that fibrocystic breasts are more likey to become cancerous..... (I have already had a hys due to what he called 'possible cancer in the uterine muscle'... that he could not determine with a D & C (because that proceedure only detects cancer in the inner tissue) and he determined that I did have 'ABNORMALITY' in the muscle after it was removed.) So, what about my daughter???? She is 18 and has large breasts.... she is Achon..... I have seen this is fairly common with achons.. AND, she has fibrocystic breasts. That was determined when she had an infection in her mammory glands and had them looked at through ultrasound. I asked my doctor about it and he said there is no reason to have her screened at such a young age. MIND YOU .......... I have already mentioned my cousin!!!!! Since it is not recommended (and we have the same ob/gyn) insurance will not pay for screening. Obviously, I will pay for mammography for her if need be before the age of 30 (which I am told is the earliest that insurance will pay). Has ANYONE here had that experience with the large, fibrocystic breasts, at a young age AND found a way for insurance to pay for it? FURTHER, ............. Is there any indication that female little people experience breast cancer more commonly than the average sized population? Thank you.
